I wasn't very clear... i mean, most web stores here sells a lot of ECC buffered kits, but not many unbuffered ECC ones. The only one i could find is a CL11 1600mhz Kingston kit (which is ok since it is also on the qualified memory list for the MB)

Link us to some Italian web shops that you use and we'll help you find some good memory (you don't necessarily have to buy a kit).

Also, if you're considering an 1155 workstation build, make sure that you are looking at the Xeon E3 processors instead of the i5/i7 processors since the E3's are the ones that support ECC.

You are the sort of user that Intel aims its Sandy Bridge Enterprise 2011 platform at. You would likely see good benefits from running 6 cores/12 threads and additional RAM. You should consider a 2011 + 3930k, because its likely 50% faster than what you are getting.

I'd have to give up ECC memory support, "Workstation Class" monickers, which i don't care about honestly, but my boss (who's buying) does (i am dealing with an Hewlett Packard fanboy here... D: )
I will look into a build like that though.

You don't have to give that up when you go with LGA 2011, it will just cost you more to get it. Higher-end workstations are all LGA 2011.

Jesus those taxes! I guess the Italian govt. has to pay down those debts somehow!

I usually don't like to derail threads, but I have to give some background on the sales tax.

Generally, the income tax fraud rate is much higher in Europe (only God knows why). "Fraud" includes deductibles, loopholes, accounting tricks (the legal ways) and laundering/hiding away money. The way the governments there generally make up for this fraud is increasing sales tax, which is harder to avoid.

Well, that and they have more welfare programs to pay for.

I mixed up the eur / usd numbers, it's 1700 before taxes, still...

There's a 21% tax on any sale to the final consumer.
Gasoline fuel here is $9 per gallon :\
As sleepingforest says the issue is that there is still a big chunk of people who either just don't pay taxes or do their best to avoid them. This is a cultural problem! (that we are trying to solve, and to me it seems we are going somewhere)
I'll just tell you a number. Our central bank estimates that fraudulent activity makes up 30% of our GDP (about 650 billion $)

Sorry for the off topic

One more question crazymonkey...
i keep reading on the Asus forum of many issue with the P8B WS and ECC sticks.
I am sure this got better with the P8C, but do you run your memory without problems? Is the ECC function working?

Did you get the Kingston stick from the qualified memory list?

Thanks.

Also, as a general question, i've read that buffered and registered are just two common ways to say the same thing, is this true?

Sorry for the uber late response

Yes I am using four sticks of this kingston ECC on the qualified vendor list (yes you bought the right stuff). People that are having trouble with memory on the Asus board are most probably trying to use buffered ECC memory. This Asus P8C WS only supports unbuffered ECC. The two are different, and not to be confused. And in my experience, the ECC functionality is working perfectly fine. My computer has been running computations 24/7 with no hiccups for the past few months. Hope you enjoy your new rig.
