Nice

I used to do that... hated it. 12 hour days killed me, felt like I woke up, went to work, got home, and went right back to sleep. also seemed like I got less down at work... after so many hours, you're just zonked and don't want to do work anymore.

currently doing 4 10 hour days and it's my preferred schedule (though on my current schedule, my days suck... I so Sat -> Tues with W/R/F off). the difference between 8 and 10 is marginal but I still feel like I have plenty of time after work to do stuff (grocery shopping, cleaning, etc)

A "real job" is one where you're paid fairly for work.

You're either making $$$$ in OT or getting screwed.

our old company said they will do 9*9 - so every alternate weekend will be a three day weekend. but it never materialized.

Doesn't everyone on ATOT make bank?

I haven't worked 40 hours a week since I worked at Lowe's right outta high school

I worked more as a Sys Admin, and I work much more now...

that's something that's going to greatly depend on your position and company.

I work for a web hosting company... every department is 24/7/365 except internal IT, development, and the administrative people (sales, legal, HR, etc). just due to the nature of shift work, there's never much cause for working past the clock because there's almost always someone around to pass on-going issues to.

I think 4x10 would be great in theory, but in practice productivity must tank those extra hours. I currently do 9/80 (80 hours in 9 days) so I get every other Friday off, which translates to 8x9 hour days + 1x8 hour day, which is pretty reasonable.

Please tell me you're being paid hourly, rather than a salary. If salary then you = idiot for working that many hours. If you're working hourly and getting paid overtime, then it's nice to meet someone who has no life, but loves his job so much he still enjoys life.

No kidding! I had 55 hours last week, 50 the week before...and I am really looking forward to having a full 3 days off starting tomorrow!

Got another one for your poll, OP. Eight 9's and an 8. New job (in an office) has me on those hours, gives me every other Friday off.

Funny thing is, old job (at same company) had me working the exact same hours, only gave me an hour off for lunch (which I just ate at work, instead of going out to get lunch), and counted it as 8 hours. Now I eat at my desk, help any occasional customer that walks in while I'm eating (usually only takes a minute or two), and they count that as working nine hours! Even better, I get off an hour earlier on the 9th day, since I've hit my 80 hours for the pay period!!

Gosh.....that's tough to deal with!

If you're non-exempt, they're required by law to.

what?! required by law to get paid for lunch hr?!

Does it really matter if you're salaried? You'll work until the job gets done, whether that's 5-8, 7-8, 7-16, etc.

do people really let themselves get turned into their company's bitch like that?

I mean, it's one thing if you're up against a deadline or something and I have zero problems staying late if I'm working on something critical, but if your work absolutely can't get done within normal working hour timeframes and your company refuses to hire more people to distribute the workload around, you're not a worker, you're a voluntary slave.

Meh, work to live, not live to work. Your salary was probably based on a 40 hour work week when you started. I can understand putting in some overtime if you messed up or it's an emergency, but otherwise it's not your fault that they scheduled poorly.

Absolutely 4 10s. Once I've been to work, my day's ruined. it doesn't matter if it's 2 hours, or 10 hours, it's now a work day. I'd rather stay a couple hours late each day, and get another whole non work day in exchange.

I thought about this schedule and wondered if anyone actually did it. It would be really nice to get every other Friday off just by working an extra hour 8 days. Heck, even getting a half day off and working an extra 30 minutes would be nice.

Since our clients work M-F and we're a small company, 4-day weeks wouldn't work out.

For people who are salaried and have scheduled 40-hour work weeks, how common is it for the lunch break to be included in your hours worked (paid lunch break)? My friend just graduated from law school and got a job at the IRS, and he just works 9 to 5. So with a half-hour lunch break included in the 8-hour timeslot, that's a 7.5 hour workday.

I am hourly, but lunch/dinner/etc break is included during the regular workday. If you're interrupted during your break, tough luck..that's how it goes.

I'm salaried and my lunch break is included in my scheduled hours. it's also pretty much an unspoken rule that nearly everyone in the company works while eating lunch more often than not, but I'm not on the clock, so if my coworker and I want to go out and have a long lunch some random afternoon, no one's going to care as long as it's not abused.
