World Chess Federation has told women they must cover their hair while competing in 2017 tournament being held in Iran.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...-world-championships-Iran-wearing-hijabs.html

Why do European nations and the United States give in to middle eastern nations when it comes to womens rights? Even the so called champion of womens rights, hillary clinton, wore a head scarf while visiting the middle east.

When are liberals going to demand we take a stand for womens rights? It seems a slap in the face to talk about womens rights, and then give in when a nation of the middle east says women have to cover up.

Personally, tell iran to piss off. The tournament can be held in a nation that respects womens rights.

The World Chess Federation has separate tournaments for men and women. I don't think women's rights is any higher on their priority list than it is on yours.

Don't like iran politics? Don't go to iran. now STFU.

Not very nice.

When are liberals going to stand up for womens rights like they "say" do?

Maybe liberals are hypocrites, and conservatives are the true champions of womens rights?

Maybe TH has never been to Italy or other catholic nations, even eastern europe with strong orthodox traditions, where certain churches tied to old sects of Christianity require the women to cover their hair when walking into their churches? I've been to these places and no women complained when some other religion asked them to cover their hair when entering their space.

Maybe TH should divert his hate hard-on to our own homegrown Amish and their gender-specific rules before bloviating about what the Iranians do regarding issues that he honestly doesn't give a shit about beyond some flaccid attempt to score team politiking points.

"Cover your hair to honor our local custom, please."

Yes, it is absolutely the same. Who the fuck gives a shit? It's not like they are making them wear burkas and swatting their shoulders for showing some wrist.

Um, so what is the punishment if you don't follow the rules of the church, vs not following the rules of the country? I would imagine that they are a bit different.

The real question is why in the world did the chess federation decide to venue their tournament in Iran in the first place? It can't be the night life. I would think it would cause real security risks for any western and especially any US players. Remember those hikers that accidentally strayed over the border a few years back-they were tried and convicted of being spies and imprisoned until the west bought them out.

Whether or not women have to cover their heads there would be like reason 999 I wouldn't pick Iran to have my chess tournament.

Obviously those customs and their respective punishments are existing in two different eras, but at one point it was the same. I think the catholic church killed enough people as heretics for violating these silly little customs that it became unfashionable enough to abandon such practices. A lot of Islam around the world is still mired in that, though.

I guess once they are tired of capital punishment for such crimes, they will adapt, too. Either be patient, or just don't fucking go.

Because Fide does not see it as a big deal.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/201...-accuse-governing-body-of-sex-discrimination/

"
Susan Polgar, the Hungarian-born American Grandmaster and chair of Fide's Commission for Women's Chess, responded by defending the federation and saying women should respect "cultural differences".

She said: "I have travelled to nearly 60 countries. When I visited different places with different cultures, I like to show my respect by dressing up in their traditional style of clothing. No one asked me to do it. I just do it out of respect.

"I personally would have no issues with wearing a head scarf (hijab) as long as it is the same to all players. I believe the organisers provided beautiful choices for past participants of Women's Grand Prix.

"I cannot speak on behalf of others but from my personal conversations with various players in the past year, they had no real issues with it.

"If any player has a problem with it, she can and should voice her opinion to the Commission for Women's Chess or Fide and we can address it in our next meeting.""

So, if I follow, because Christianity did it that we must now accept that others still do it. You can't say that Iran is bad because everyone was once bad.

I never really understood this logic. Christianity being the OG of horrible shit, which no doubt has done horrible things in the not so distant past, means anyone who criticizes Islam has a "hate hard-on". The Amish are known for lashing women in public and or putting them in prison for not following their rules apparently.

This is weird. TH is a D-bag, but why do we need to have this weird logic for sexism? Telling women they need to cover their hair or risk public lashings and or jail seems super bad. Just because TH is the one who posted this, does not make it bigotry.

*Edit
I'm also going to use hate hard-on in RL. I did actually enjoy that part lol

But your argument was a general statement, not about TH logic. You were trying to exemplify TH's bigotry by saying that Eastern Europe has the same type of thing going on. While it is true that the religious there also have dumb rules, it is many factors of magnitude different in terms of punishment. It would be completely illegal to be punished in the same ways that Iran currently has.

So, while the issue does not seem directly related to politics, it does bring to light a troubling issue that people are okay with dismissing sexism as "culture".

please do, but be aware of your company.

You don't jump into a pool and expect to not get wet. My only rule is that if you are willingly hanging with me, you better be okay with having a good time. I would not go to a bank teller and tell her that, but I would to anyone who jumps into my pool lol.

The mock piety for women's rights coming from a rabid pro-life Muslim hater is enough to make me gag-

There is no mock pity from me, I love women.

The liberal left pretends to care about womens rights, then when something like this comes along they sit on their hands. Even the champion of womens rights (hillary) gave in when she visited the middle east and wore a head scarf.

The honest truth is conservatives care more about women than the liberal left.

Well, if you want to bring up being consistent then he has a point. Many on the left are Pro women's rights and yet they also feel that you must respect cultures.

Surely you must agree that the people who defend the bad parts of Islamic culture in this case are not from the Right. I suspect your argument will be that they do it for the wrong reasons, but it would then be pointed out that the left defends the wrong thing for the right reasons, which seems equally stupid.

Today I learned that deciding women should carry rape babies is defending women's rights, and having them wear headscarves is stomping all over their rights. Thanks, TexasHiker, don't know what I'd do without you!
