Around world, Obama's presidency a disappointment

In Europe, where more than 200,000 people thronged a Berlin rally in 2008 to hear Barack Obama speak, there's disappointment that he hasn't kept his promise to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, and perceptions that he's shunting blame for the financial crisis across the Atlantic.

In Mogadishu, a former teacher wishes he had sent more economic assistance and fewer armed drones to fix Somalia's problems. And many in the Middle East wonder what became of Obama's vow, in a landmark 2009 speech at the University of Cairo, to forge a closer relationship with the Muslim world.

In a world weary of war and economic crises, and concerned about global climate change, the consensus is that Obama has not lived up to the lofty expectations that surrounded his 2008 election and Nobel Peace Prize a year later.

Many in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America were also taken aback by his support for gay marriage, a taboo subject among religious conservatives.

"We all had high hopes for him," said Filomena Cunha, an office worker in Lisbon, Portugal, who said she's struggling to make ends meet. "But then things got bad and there's not much he can do for us over here."

"We all had high hopes for him,"

So did those in the US who voted for him. The only ones who will still vote for him are the mindless shills and those who are easily fooled.

Granted Obama has been a disappointment, but its amazing how many shills there are on this forum who think someone far worse than Obama, Romney for example, would not be a even worse disappointment. Because Romney wholeheartedly advocates those very policies Obama promised to be better on.

Your post would have merit if Romney was actually worse than Obama. Since he is not, it fails as a post. You should have used Biden in your example, he is certainly worse than Obama. Or you could have used Huey Newton.

True, democracy was brought to an area of the world which refused to embrace it. This started a firestorm of democratic movements throughout the region.

That is definately great for the world.

I don't know if his failed presidency is a result of him failing as a man or that the office at this time demands failure upon all who enter it. My faith in US politics certainly has never been as low as it is now. I no longer care all that much who's president; it really doesn't seem to matter.

Romney doesn't have a single redeeming quality. For the first time EVER I will probably vote for a Democrat.

Can we get some more turd sandwiches and giant douches to run please? I love spending my time every 4 years voting for completely incompetent people.

mark my words, in 25 years obama will be looked on as one of the best presidents ever. kennedyish..

anyone who doesnt see how he's turned this country around is very shortsighted... see he didnt do things in his time in office to gain popularity, it comes naturally to him, he's actually doing things that WILL put this country back in good standing in 20 years, we'll never be the superpower we are, because simply, humans are evolving, we will never again have a 1 superpower world, technology is spreading everywhere, and with that, the people move out of the stone age, it's time for us to move over and not try to run shit in the world like we always have, we need to cut military spending, instead of guns, how bout some shovels? how bout we improve the entire planted instead of just thinking about our little country.. because what's the fun in being the only 1st world country, when the whole world can be it with us.

Excessive economic inequality and governmental corruption led to the firestorm of democratic movements you cite, triggered by the self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi.

"But the Democrat still enjoys broad international support. In large part, it's because of unfavorable memories of his Republican predecessor, George W. Bush, and many people would still prefer Obama over his presumptive Republican challenger Mitt Romney."

So how exactly did you extrapolate that the world was looking forward to Romney?

You're welcome. You are gaining instruction for free, had you gone to a school, you would have had to pay a lot of money to learn.

Because, like ya know, the real ones don't actualy espouse this.

Your list of "real ones" is pretty long. Good thing you did not post them all...

My personal view on this particular issue, as a foreigner, is the following scenario: bad with Obama, worse without him. I don't believe that if Romney is elected in november the things will change between the United States and rest of the world. On the contrary, maybe the relation gets worse.

These things that Romney has said on campaign like "the US has to recover its position as a leader in the world" its kind unreal to me nowadays. I'm not saying that the US are losing his influence as a powerful nation, but is clear to me that they (the US as a nation) are sharing its powerful influence with other nations, like China, for instance.

Romney has said: "He (Obama) believes America's role as leader in the world is a thing of the past. I believe a strong America must - and will - lead the future". I see this as populist speech to attract those who believe in that. We all know that China is part of the engine of global economy. We can't just shut eyes on this, because it's the real true.

But, if Romney is elected in november, he will face real trouble on the economy. Maybe the europeans are expecting that he will solve, in some way, the austerity they are facing now, improving the relation between the two continents.

Just because people are disappointed with Obama does not mean that they look forward to Romney. He has yet to explain how he can offer anything better, or at least equivalent to Obama, as POTUS.

Romney has something that Obama never had when he took office... Experience. Obama never ran anything and the toughest thing he probably had to do was balance his own checkbook.

I'd vote for big bird before I'd vote for Romney.
