So Blizzard is currently selling the core game for five bucks!

I never really played WoW before. If I start now for the first time, is that even a good idea?

My Concerns:

1)What if the train has left the station... Meaning I'm too late to the party. What if "golden" time for WoW may have passed, and it's kinda pointless to start now?

2)I am a 100% solo player. I do not like the social aspect of MMOs. I don't like joining a party, raiding, etc. Is it possible to get good loot solo? IS it possible to enjoy the game solo?

3)IF I do start playing, how important is it for me to have the other expansion packs/DLCs?

Anything else I should consider?

It looks like a 5 buck deal for the whole game (all expansions) up to Warlords of Draenor.

So you can level all the way to 100 for 5 bucks. The latest expansion is Legion and lets you level up to 110, so if you wanted to catch up with every other player, you'd have to buy that when you reach level 100.

WoW is a great game, probably the best ever. You can do lots solo if that's all you want. For 5 bucks you have to be crazy not to try it out.

I think it all depends on what kind of solo player you are. If you enjoy the stories, read quests and like smelling the the roses there is much for you to do.

As far as the current expansion goes you will find yourself rather limited if you want zero social interactions. Everything from crafting to quest story lines ends up involving group play to a small extent. If you can be ok running about 8 instances once you should be able to get all the important stuff as far as the current expansions special weapons and crafting gates done. Decent gear is easy to come by solo or from open world group content that you can usually get done by waiting at said objective for a short time until enough other random players come by to finish it.

As far as the older content goes, if you love the stories and dont care about specific challenge you will find that a current expansion character can go back to run older content including the raid content with ease. I think the last expansions raids may not be able to completed solo but the 5 man groups and the other 4 expansion before that should be no problem. If you are looking for challenging gameplay then the older content will not be very exciting but there is the original game and 4 expansion you can see more or less all of and 1 you can see most of giving you a great deal of stuff to do.

Cool, so I'll give it a try then. I guess I can be ok with small groups if necessary. When I said I was "antisocial" I meant that I don't want to be like those people who absolutely have to be in a guild and log on at the same time, etc, etc just to be successful. No time for it.

But other than that, I am fine with PUGs and somesuch...

I played for several years between Burning Crusade and Cataclysm and then just got tired of it. A year ago when it was $5 I decided to get back into the game. With the ability to pay for the game subscription with in-game gold I haven't had to pay for a subscription since I started back up. I found it fairly easy to make gold and it's even easier now. With the in-game tokens for game time I will play for a month and take a month off and then play again. Keeps me from getting burned out and I don't feel like I'm wasting subscription money (not that $15 is a lot). It's definitely worth trying out. Join a server that has a good population or if you know someone who plays you can get some help with the leveling. I primarily play solo, I was more into groups my first time playing when I had more friends that played. I will still group for quests, dungeons and eventually raiding but I do fine just going through the content solo.

If you do decide to play, let me know and I can get you started with some gold and bags as well as offer any advice (if you need it)

I still say its the best MMORPG around for content, looks, not so much. Its been Dumbed down quite a lot, almost to casual status, even the mythic stuff is grade school to some other "normal" raids in other MMORPG's so there is alot of butt hurt for the hardcore, cant sniff there noses at people with jobs and such (yep stereotyping them) forgive me. I think the "class can fill 3 rolls" is a bit BS when not all of them can do it, just some, but it is what it is. No other game has the amount of game, none even come close. Crafting, factions, achievements, pets, vanity items, BG's etc.. many are simple grinds, but what part of a MMO isn't really. There is plenty that could be fixed but wont to keep the average player, and ehhh, why not. I still play it fairly regular and enjoy it in short bursts of a month.. and in winter.. good time to start if it gets cold where you are.

The only issue you will run into is that you will be doing a quest then hit the step that requires a dungeon, or raid instance (only some quests are like this). You will still have plenty to do solo, just need to be aware of the limits of that.

I am a nearly-100%-solo player also. When I was playing WoW on and off in 2010-2012, I had plenty of fun. There are, as Sonikku said, better single player games out there (Like The Old Republic, heheheh) but it's not bad, and if nothing else, you'll have a better understanding of a lot of internet jokes.

Yeah, I don't pay for my subscriptions anymore either. My Rogue is the most along in regard to Class Hall missions, so I pretty much spam any gold mission on him (I'm usually between 160-200% success rate). That usually nets me around 1400-1800g for each mission, and I can complete two at a time. Order Resources are pretty much a joke once you get past the resource sink that is research (15,000 for the final tier), so I have something like 18,000 resources, and the gold missions are essentially just converting them for me.

How much time does it take to make the gold required for the token for 1 month subscription?

Depends on a lot of factors. The token prices doubled recently but if you've got a max level character with gathering professions or a profession that can bring in a lot of money you could make the gold in anywhere from days to weeks.

Where are you seeing these expacs for $5?

I have Vanilla + Expacs up until Cataclysm. I'm wanting to get my content caught up and resub because I'm going to be a stay at home dad for a while and want something I can get into.

I've always wanted to play WoW, but I refuse to pay them monthly to play a game I'd probably play 90% solo. Even if the base game is $5, I shouldn't have to constantly give them money if something happens in real life and keeps me away from the game for a while and I can't accumulate enough in-game currency to pay for my next month's session. It's especially annoying considering Battle.net has been free since it was started.

I have no idea what a token costs, but (this is a real odd way to put it) if you play with any regularity, you get that first month free (don't you still?) you will be almost max level. Once you are in the 90's you can start farming, while many get nerfed quickly a few hours hear and there should net you coin is my guess (again depending on price) and the upside is you can almost always do MOUNT farming (something many do anyways) at the same time.

I bought a token the other day, and it was 55,000 gold.

So most (err, some) farming spots net about 10,000 gold an hour give or take.. 5-6 hours a month on making your month free. Add an hour or 2 to that just to be sure. Seems fairly easy to anybody max level. Of course prices change , farming gets nerfed, slows down, server economies change. me i would just do a couple hours every week and would be good, but I'm to lazy, I farm up my flying skills for alts, and that's about it.

can anybody tell me where I can buy these newer expacs for $5?
Nowhere.
The base game might be cheap, but the newest expansion pack always stays at a relatively high price during the first 12-16 months.

On the (european) battle.net website the online price is still 45 euros. Ridiculous. In my (european) country the cheapest you can buy in an online webshop is 37 euros. You migth be able to buy a Russian or Asian gamecode, but then you probably won't be able to play on a US or EU server.

Remember, it is not Blizzards goal to make the game better and attract more players and thus make more profit. No. Their goal is clearly to make the gamers that keep playing pay more per head. That includes keeping services like server-migration, race-change, in-store mounts and pets, etc overpriced. But it now also seems they try to make each remaining player pay the max for the expansion.

No. I left the game years ago, after the first or second expansion, when I realized a solo player would never have access to the best gear.

What farming spots are you talking about? Farming for gold or for mats/mining/herbs to sell on the AH?

No. I left the game years ago, after the first or second expansion, when I realized a solo player would never have access to the best gear.

You can get legendaries(best gear in the game) by turning in world quests. These world quests are mostly solo.

i started and made it to 60 right before the first expansion came out, played about 6 months. It was fun but then once i hit lvl 60 i got bored... wasn't really into doing raids with huge groups, just took too much time.

The last time I jumped in, they had changed the combat to such a degree it was unrecognizable. Like, moonfire doesn't cost mana? What is with that?

Nostalrius is up.
