I have been trying to get wow to work at school, but the school has blocked the port, does anyone know of a way to open up the port?

I don't beleive that is your concern, but I would have you know that I do value my education... that is why all of my grades are upwards of 90's.

your IT dept would not appreciate you trying to circumvent their security measures and kids get kicked out for stuff like that.
have you asked them nicely if or why they block it?

I have looked at the rule book that is given to every student and nowhere does it say that their is any punishment for circumventing their security. And yes I have asked them quite a few time if they would unblock it, and every time they have said they didn't even it was blocked. Which leads me to beleive that they either don't care or don't want to deal with it.

Value your education and don't play WoW at school.
QFT!

Ugh, stop stereotyping gamers together like this. The semesters I played WoW, I achieved my highest GPAs of all semesters. This includes taking my higher level CS courses. Oh and no funnies about "2.0 may be higher than 1.9, but it still ain't good", 'cause I made Dean's List I believe every semester I played WoW... maybe I missed it once (I know I missed it once while I wasn't playing WoW) and if I did, it was by less than .1.

I did know people that failed out because they played video games too much (not WoW though). It's pretty much safe to say that there's two reasons for them failing out a) they had problems to begin with b) they don't have the mental capacity to throw some of their study time at a game (akin to the idea of the people who have to study 3x as much as others to achieve the same grade).

ya, since this is a boarding school they have to or kids would revolt, so does anyone have any idea how to get around the firewall?

It's none of any of your damn business whether he wants to play WoW at school or not. Maybe he has a semester of super easy credits. Maybe he is goign part time and just wants to use it on the schools network on his lunch break? It isn't our place to judge.. Now, to answer the question.

The wow website has the ports that it uses. The ports used for the patcher are different than the ports used for the game. If you don't need to run the patches for the game at school it will likely be easier to get IT to open the ports.

How to get the ports open: Walk into IT and talk to the people. Go up to one of the nerdier people and ask nicely for them to open some ports for you for world of warcraft. Even better would be to get a ton of wow players together to ask them. They would most certainly open them, then. Depending on your school you may need to go through asb to open them.

An alternatvie is to get dsl or dial up if you live in the dorm and have a phone line. You can then download the patches from a ftp or http site using the fast college connection then play on the slower connection.

Provide them with as many details as you can as to what needs to be done. If they won't/can't do it, ask for an explanation which you could take to someone higher up the food chain to get the policy changed?

You'll get a lot more help if you explain your situation clearer ... I read the OP and though you were trying to get on WOW during class too ...

Thank you so much for your help I guess I can keep trying to get them to open the ports.

You need to talk to your school's IT department.
Circumventing a network that is not owned or run by you is NOT a good idea.

LOL! This thread reminds me of the call I got when I was working the help desk (Help Desk for several Higher Ed schools)...

Student: "Yeah, I can't get my XBox to work over the network... I already called Microsoft and they said that my network has the ports blocked for XBox Live. I *need* you to open them for me..."
Me: "Ah, sir, we do not support the XBox on the campus network."
Student: "I don't care, just open up the ports dude."
Me: "Well sir, I can't do that as that is an unsupported system. Even if I wanted to, I do not have the ability to reconfigure the router for you."
Student: "Well if you can't, who can change the router??" (getting slightly pissed... beer level getting low)
Me: "Well, I suppose I can forward your request to Network Services, but they're not likely to do that as it is against network policy."
Student: "Yeah, that'd be great. Can you make sure they get the router thing setup right for my XBox?"
Me: "Alright, I'll send down the ticket for you sir. Have a good one."

Normally, I'd just close the ticket and that would be the end of it. But I figured I'd give the network crew a good chuckle for the night. I sent that ticket on down.

I don't see why you would block XBox Live for residents living on campus.

If it's a boarding school I would think that you would do whatever you can to make the kids that attend happy. It's one thing if your network is reaching it's limit without kids playing video games online, but to just refuse to allow kids to play games is not cool. It shouldn't be the school administrations decision whether kids are allowed to play video games or not. I hate to put it this way but in a sense you work for the kids that go to the school because without them you have no job. The kids also essentially pay for the internet coming into the school so they should be allowed to use it the way they want. I understand that their are certain things that the school must do to protect the users on the network, but blocking XBox Live and WoW is certainly not one of them, and it is a relatively easy fix to unblock a single port.
