I'm on episode 2 of the first season of 24.

And I'm actually being honest.

Yeah it's pretty cool and if you like that checkout the Timelife color of war series too.

I didn't know that History television and the History channel were different. I always thought they were the same channel.

The show is incredibly graphic. I am glad to see they are not trying to hide anything. I think it makes it much more real, especially in color. WW2 always seemed so distant in black and white.

First, it's a minor thing but, it's not World War 2, it's World War II.
Second, I think the B & W footage is more striking than the color but, I grew up with B & W. I am glad that these shows give a little more context for those who think Vietnam is ancient history though.

is this somehow footage that hasn't been played a million times? i initially passed on this because i guessed it would be WWII in Color digitally processed and upscaled. maybe i'm a purist, but i like the look of period-correct film.

The description at the beginning of each episode says that most has never been seen on TV before this. It sounds like they scoured private and government libraries to get a lot of the film. It is period correct color video,

What little I saw in the ads looked colorized and that is an immediate turn off for me, so no.

And how can 50 year old film be HD since that tech is a recent development.

Because most film has a higher "resolution" than even HD video. I haven't seen any HD footage from WWII, but assuming the original film stock was well maintained, it should be possible to scan at HD resolutions.

There is no such thing as a pixel to a ream of film. HD is all about how many pixels you can display, film has no such constraint.

Negative.

It is the second world war whether you abbreviate it WW2 or using Roman numerals e.g. WWII.

It's not about communicating which war we're talking about, it's about respect. The history of the time uses WWII. It's the difference between "Hey Dude!" and "Excuse me, Sir."

The whole purpose of historical shows like this is not to display pretty explosions, it's to convey the war within the thinking and culture of the times. Maybe you'll get it when your grandchildren reinterpret the cultural icons of today. 'Course, they won't listen either.

To use the parlance of the time:

You are crackers, mate.

The Telegraph favored the abbreviation WW2, while the BBC scripts used "World War Two."

If you prefer to make up your own history, fine...I fancy the rest of us would prefer facts, thank you.

I know that but if the source is low quality 8mm then I don't think you can improve that.

Some great video in the program. The first one surprised me that they showed it unedited. It was very graphic. The piles of Japanese soldiers covered with flies and missing body parts while they were all interconnected as they fell was a really telling moment of how intense the fight was.

While it says WWII in HD it really is not. The film that was used at the time was very low quality early color film, over 60 years old, and probably not been kept in ideal conditions to preserve it. Also remember that a lot of this was shot during combat and the lighting was poor so you take what you can get. For the purists the film has not been colorized.

Film is limited by grain size. Old color film like in this tv series averaged about 30 lines per millimeter. So for film of the time it works out to :

8mm - 4.5mm x 3.3mm or 135 x 99 resolution.
16mm - 10.26mm x 7.49mm or 307 x 224 resolution

They could have some film that used cutting edge techniques of the time but even that would not even be dvd quality ( 720 x 480).

35mm color was not available in quantity at the time so most of this footage is 300 x 220 and enhanced with filters .

Modern day film is around 200 lines per mm for a limit of :
8mm - 900 x 660
16mm - 2052 x 1498

i had resolved never to post in off topic because i hate the forums but this is so asinine and ridiculous that i just had to come in and say that this was asinine and ridiculous. as long as someone doesnt refer to it as "world war, too" then i think everything will be ok.

It was very graphic. There were no qualms about showing fallen American soldiers that had been in the water for days, or Japanese soldiers with massive wounds straight through their heads. Very sobering.

I watched it and was a bit disappointed. I felt it was a bit over the place with trying to go back and forth between the characters.

But I do enjoy the color film. It really gives you a sense of the era. Especially espisode one with the film with the Germans in a military parade and then Hitler driving through.

It was also interesting to see they talked about American soldiers shooting unarmed German POWs in Africa and the moral dilema the commander was put into.

Some of the film is supposedly never been shown. It was locked up in peoples personal archives.

It very much reminded me of the writing style of Stephen Ambrose. You constantly bounce from story to story.
