The show on the invasion of Tarawa was most excellent. Loved the footage from the hand-held cameras the marines carried as they came ashore. Great work on the sound also, I was almost ducking as the bullets were whizzing by!

I also liked the segment on the patrol in New Britain. I'm amazed that someone was still filming as they were being ambushed by the Japanese!

Overall a great show.

It's on right now for me. I'm recording the episodes to watch at my leisure. I have watched a little of it and it looks really interesting.

I just watched the first 1.5 hour episode. I'm impressed. I'll definitely be watching the rest of the series.

History Channel needs more of this type of stuff as opposed to some of the garbage they show.

Wow, they even showed hangings and executions. Definitely the type of documentary someone would like to collect.

Yeah I will be picking it up.
I already have all the old field manuals for everything from old weapons blueprints and combat manuals, to books on uniform design, etc. So it will fit my collection nicely.

i got some from both my grandparents. one fought on the German side and one on the US side.

I would love to get more but always seems something else i need to spend my extra money on. Though i did pre-order this set.

is this somehow footage that hasn't been played a million times? i initially passed on this because i guessed it would be WWII in Color digitally processed and upscaled. maybe i'm a purist, but i like the look of period-correct film.

There was color film at the time. Lest you forget Gone With the Wind, Wizard of Oz...pre-date WW2. (well, I should say ~ the same time )

There is also a ridiculously awesome set of WW1 color photographs out there to be seen. taken by some French soldier.

To use the parlance of the time:

You are crackers, mate.

The Telegraph favored the abbreviation WW2, while the BBC scripts used "World War Two."

If you prefer to make up your own history, fine...I fancy the rest of us would prefer facts, thank you.

Bloody Limeys!

The encyclopedia Britannica refers to the war as WWII. The NY Times refers to the war as WWII

I respect the sacrifices of the English people during the war but, only the Brits think they were instrumental in ending it. History is written by the winners ie. the U.S.

Since most of ATOT is American, I chose to use the nomenclature of American culture although I included the encyclopedia Britannica just to show that even the Brits sometimes get it right.

History is not about facts, it is about the relative perspectives of the people who write it. Historical facts by themselves are meaningless. I realize this is heresy to much of ATOT who thinks there is a single Truth but, all of recorded history is colored by the cultures involved and any useful insight can only be garnered by understanding those cultures.

While most can agree that the cultures of WWII were different than now, few can make the leap to recognize the differences between modern day civilizations let alone, within our own country. The internet has provided instant communication between countries while removing all context which is why there has been such an upswing of 'webspeak.'

Film, like the current war in color series, does a tremendous job of broadening the perspectives of people who lack the training or interest to acquire the skills of cultural anthropology but, will forever be limited by that lack

/*Arnie*/ "Hear me now, believe me later!" /*Arnie*/
Cultural differences persist and will persist even when internet access reaches 100% If you wish to truly understand (and be understood) you must speak from a common viewpoint. More, you have to realize that sometimes there is no common viewpoint. "Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra"

Sorry for the lecture, I'm out of beer.
We now return you to the scheduled broadcast.

thanks, cap'n obvious. i meant that i like the look of original footage, without "improvements". the only thing wrong with the WWI in Color program was the coloring - slightly better than the sacrilege performed upon movies a few years ago.

are these the photos you mention?

What a pile of meaningless psycho-babble.

Do you ever actually think before you post, or do you just let your fingers vomit all over your keyboard.

Your parents upstairs need to stop buying you beer.

I was watching it but then I switched over to the discovery of the WWII Japanese I-14 aircraft carrying submarine, followed by Germany's secret WWII stealth jet.

I saw some things last night that left a lasting impact.
When they took an island near Japan after the fight there were supposed to be thousands of civilians. They searched and couldn't locate them . That was until they got to the far end of the island near the cliffs. The civilians had jumped off the cliff , taking their children and babies with them . Some waded into the ocean with their entire family. Others slit their own child throat. It is one thing to read about things like this, but to see hundreds of bodies laying at the bottom of a cliff, children included, video of people jumping off the cliffs, and children sitting crying covered with dirt and blood.

My heart just sank watching it.

Saipan?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Saipan

Many hundreds of Japanese civilians committed suicide in the last days of the battle, some jumping from "Suicide Cliff" and "Banzai Cliff". Efforts by U.S. troops to persuade them to surrender instead were mostly futile. Widespread propaganda in Japan portraying Americans and British as "devils" who would treat POWs barbarically, deterred surrender
PFC Guy Gabaldon, a Mexican-American from Los Angeles, California, is officially credited with capturing more than 1,000 Japanese prisoners during the battle. PFC Gabaldon, who was raised by Japanese-Americans, used a combination of street Japanese and guile to convince soldiers and civilians alike that U.S. troops were not barbarians, and that they would be well treated upon surrender. For his outstanding bravery, Gabaldon received a Silver Star, which was upgraded to the Navy Cross.[10]

The video they have shown is remarkable. A lot of it is from private collections. They've had a few shorts regarding the collections between episodes.

It's kind of crazy that they have been showing this series 20 out of 24 hours a day.

Side note: Amy Smart is a terrible voice actress. This is inline with her other acting, though
