Changwan, yeah, probably BlueGene or something else that I'll never, ever have access to. Can't very well run HL2 on it, though. The best consumer-grade computer is another, more interesting story.

Those are basically consumer level stuff... you can obviously spend tens of thousands of dollars (or significantly more) on server type systems.

Check out the September Maximum PC. Has a "Dual Everything Dream Machine." Dual 7800GTX's, dual dual core Opterons, almost 2 TB storage, 8 GB RAM, etc. I don't see a "cost to build" or anything... I guess you could price it out yourself but I think it's safe to say it's not worth your money.

They aren't that bad, are they?
If price isn't a factor, they can give you some pretty exotic rigs.

You can build a better compy than an Alienware for about half the price.
My system total was ~=4000 and on Alienware it would have been ~=6000. Plus, with that you can only get 2GB memory.

The Cray X1e is even better if your software requires vector / SIMD processing and boatloads of bandwidth. 128 CPUs, 65 kW per cabinet (do the math, about 500 watts per CPU, hehe) liquid cooled. It uses custom Cray CPUs that run at low clockspeeds but do an insane amount of work per cycle.

Maybe the coolest thing about the Cray X1 and X1e is that it actually uses a SunFire 6800 or SunFire 6900 (48 UltraSPARC CPU cores) in an I/O cabinet just to feed the X1's processors!

Virginia Tech built a supercomputer combining 1100 cpu's (dual 2.3GHz Apple's). It made number 14 on the top 500 super computer list. I have seen this "computer" with my own eyes in person. I feel special,
