Really amazing how small and powerful lasers are getting. I remember having to use glass tubes with mirrors and HV supplies with stacks of capacitors and water for cooling. Now more power than that is hand held. Retails for $300.

Wickedlasers claim their Spyder 3 Krypton is the world's brightest handheld laser so powerful its beam breaks through the atmosphere into outer space. With a theoretical range of 85 miles, the S3 Krypton is the first and only handheld laser visible from outer space. Directly viewing the dot of a the Krypton 1-watt laser (86 million lux) will appear over 8,000 times brighter than looking directly at the sun. Safety goggles are a must.

Under review by Guinness World records, the Spyder 3 Krypton is the world's brightest handheld laser. Our Earth's atmosphere ends at 62 miles but the Krypton, goes beyond as it breaks through our atmosphere, into outer space. With it's intergalactic range of 85 miles, the S3 Krypton is the first and only handheld laser visible from outer space. Directly viewing the dot of a the Krypton 1W laser (86 million lux) will appear over 8,000 times brighter than looking directly at the sun. Safety goggles are a must.

The human eye perceives pure green light 800%, 2,000%, and 19,000% brighter than red, blue, and purple light respectively. If you enjoyed wielding the awesome power of the S3 Arctic, then you'll want the S3 Krypton the most visible handheld laser on Earth, in your hands.
TeslaCool Thermostatic Regulation. The Krypton is the first laser to contain an internal thermopile detector. When excess heat is detected, the microprocessor gradually lowers operating current to ensure temperature stabilization.
Tactical Smartswitch 2.0. You have total control of the 85 mile visible laser beam. Now with 9 operation modes - including 5 new tactical modes - SOS (Hi / Low) , Beacon (Hi / Low) , and Tactical Hibernation.
100% unlimited duty cycle. Operate the laser continuously, 24/7 with no risk of damaging the laser diode.
Strong laser in a strong body. The aircraft grade aluminum chassis, same as the S3 Arctic, is a fully tested and proven quality construction that lets you be confident that the S3 Krypton is as well built as it is strong and bright.
Powerful safety features. The SmartSwitch technology locks out unauthorized access to your S3 Krypton making this super-powered laser inoperable when unattended.

That's cool. I remember doing laser light shows back in the day; the most technically demanding challenge was the plumbing. I have much respect for plumbers.

Just spent a happy half hour googling thermopile detectors. Interesting stuff, thanks for posting.

I wonder how long before some idiot blinds another idiot. I hate handheld lasers. Or maybe it's people I hate.

WTF is the point of such a powerful handheld laser? PowerPoint presentations?

Seriously, why is this product even available in the retail channel? Are these companies producing them actually hoping for bad things to happen?

Great, those same cunts who use their watches to reflect light into people's eyes will be walking around with lasers that can blind people from 85 miles away. That's just wonderful.

Burn out the eyes of people not paying attention to your presentation? I wondered the same thing. Neat as it is, it seems unnecessary.

The big demand for things like this are search and rescue. The ones like this one have mode settings on the handle. You can set it for instance to blink S-O-S . A person lost in the woods could use one to be seen by rescuers.

Realize that power output drops off fast as distance increases. At over 1 mile it would be eye safe.

Ok, I can sort of understand this, but not entirely. It's unusual to have a 1 mile line of sight in the woods. If you are signaling somebody in the air, they won't be that high, and you might injure them? (I don't know at what distance it becomes eye safe) Still seems like overkill. Probably best you not be able to accidentally injure your rescuers, and I doubt people in the ISS will come to your aid should you signal them.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's inadvisable to shine lasers at aircraft.

I think I see the cause for confusion now. These do not output like a laser pointer. A laser pointer outputs all of its power to a single dot. These output a line that gets wider the further you go from the source. By the time it gets to 10,000 ft that beam is very wide. When you wave one in the air you will see an image over a wide area. It is like the laser line levels but with more output and in green to be more sensitive to the eyes. These sort of lasers are exempt from FAA rules concerning bans of use near planes because they are considered rescue devices when used properly.

Warning: This laser's brightness is potentially hazardous to pilots' vision and satellite sensors. NEVER point it at an aircraft or a satellite. The S3 Krypton is too powerful to be used as a laser pointer or a gunsight. Never point it at another person, an animal or a vehicle.

Who needs a Stinger?

If we're lucky, the only malfeasance caused by these will be the wanna-be Jackass crowd permanently blinding each other for lulz.

Cool tech, sure, but....

They call it "Spyder". My user name is based off of my Mitsu Eclipse Spyder. I think that means I need to own this... I'd just have to keep it away from my five year old who would want to play with it and end up blind. :/

So it's a Bat Signal? Now we just need a Batman.
