Wormholes...what's the deal

So Wormholes, eh? As I understand it, there are 3 kinds in the minds of physicists and sci-fi nerds:

1) "realtime" travel: you pass out of the 2nd wormhole at the exact moment that you pass into the 1st one

2) "pre-mature" travel: The come out of the second wormhole BEFORE you enter the 1st one, and the second somehow alters time and knows you're coming

3) "retarded" travel: You come out of the second one an arbitrary amount of time after you enter the first one....being trapped in some sort of travellers purgatory for the difference in time.

Anyone want to elaborate on what would potentially cause these phenomena and how plausable they actually are?

Wormholes themselves are theoretical. Actually, that's too solid of a word. They're imagined. One's never been witnessed, and there's really no good reason one should exist. So basically, sci-fi nerds own heads "cause these phenomena."

Well, they don't really exist. They're based on speculation, and speculation alone.

Yes, you can read a lot about wormholes in Hawking's "A Brief History of Time." Also, if you're REALLY interested, google 'Hawking radiation', 'cosmic strings', and 'black hole event horizon'. That stuff will keep you more than occupied. However, what I DO want to note is that wormholes are NOT merely sci-fi fantasy. They ARE physically possible. Of course, like most speculative astrophysics, the "if our equations don't make it impossible, it can exist" effect is in play here, and that all wormhole theory is just that.

Wormholes are theoretically possible but in order for them to be feasible (for use) one would need to expand them and that requires exotic matter/negative energy. Now supposedly, scientist have done experiments and come up with small amounts of "negative energy" (no I don't remember the links), but still not enough to make a theoretical wormhole feasible.
