A big problem with this premise is that the musical eras, if you want to call them that, didn't align with the decades. There was a distinct period from the mid 1950s to early 1960s where rock and rockabilly, as well as folk, took over the airwaves and record sales exploded. Then hard rock took over in the mid 1960s and had a distinctive sound up through the mid 1970s, when disco and prog and glam rock dominated until the late 1980s.

But I agree with the posters above who say that there was great music produced in every decade, and I'd take that back to 1920 or earlier. The music of Jelly Roll Morton, Fletcher Henderson, Louie Armstrong, Count Basie and Duke Ellington was more revolutionary and more exciting than anything that's come before or since.

If we're talking pop, top 40 music then the worst era is all of them. If we're talking going off the beaten path of music then the best era is all of them.

I go by decades not eras.

Best decade? 80's. Period. /thread.
Worst decade? 90's. Period. /thread.

60' and 70's were good. 80's was best because there was a big explosion of talent, styles, genres and technology. Far more diversity of music and musicians occurred in the 80's compared to older decades.

Things went downhill in a hurry followed by decades of auto-tune garbage.

Disclaimer: this is of course only my opinion.

The thing about music today is that with modern production tools and distribution methods, anyone can get their music out. If you can't find something you like, you're not looking. It's like Steam and video games - modern technology has made it possible for even niche products to easily find an audience.

This was a great episode. NSFW

I think the 80's were great and the 2000's onwards is pretty much all shit except a few songs.

I think the 60's and 70's were the best. The beginning of the 80's was god-awful with "synth-tars" and skinny tie wearing, mullet sporting goofballs singing about women that left them (girls hate synth-tars).

The late 80's had a resurgence of some great music, and the 90's had the whole grunge/Pearljam/Seattle sound going on.

I seriously think we're living in the worst era of music right now. With computer equipment and cheap recording gear, anyone can make music- getting rid of the need for record companies. Since there's no centralized distribution, we're besieged with total crap and the good talent goes unnoticed.

Depends on your age. For any generation the best music is whatever was made when they were 15-25 years old. And for anyone over age 25 the worst music era is RIGHT NOW.
This. Although the 80's is the best music.

That's what I said! I'm fairly confident that good music in every genre is still being released.

Big fan of 90s rock/grunge. 70s has some excellent music as well. I'm not into R&B/HipHop/Dance/Trance/House/Etc so that severely limits my "new music" tastes. There's very little dub step I can handle and rock has moved to the extremes of the various types of metal.

Where are you getting your information from if this is the weird perception you have about new music releases?
My favorite new album I picked up this year (though it actually came out in 2015) is Wolf Alice - My Love is Cool. Unless you've got beef with female vocalists, it's a solid rock album, very influenced by 90s grunge (but not constrained by it).

I have no real way to find *new* music. I don't listen to the radio. And Spotify Discover Weekly is Weak at best.

You're not likely to find any good new music on the radio anyway, if you do, it is a statistical anomaly
You've got the internet, you have ways to find new music, but yes, it will require some effort on your part. I assure you there is new rock music being produced that is not metal.

The world is so different now, you can't wander into new music you have to go find it. Probably why I stopped trying. Maybe there is new rock, I never said there wasn't, I'll just wait until someone recommends something. In reality, I only listen to music at the gym anyway.

For me the best was the 70s, and there's also something nostalgic about the new wave and synth-pop of the 80s. I'm never gonna give that up in full ;-)

The worst decade in music was the 90s. I can't believe that people actually liked all the nonsensical drivel that came from Mariah Carey, Oasis and Boyz II Men. There were many shitty things about the 90s, and the music ain't no exception at all.
70's had some good stuff, but the 60's was way the best decade. That synth stuff was terrible, it was a cooptation of the spirit of the 60's. If you thought the 90's sucked, you were paying attention to the wrong music, your bad.

As a young child of the 70's, I remember not really liking much 70's music for the most part. This continued in the 80's. I didn't truly find my niche of music until the 90's.

That doesn't mean there weren't things I liked during those times (and others), and there are still bands/songs from those years that I love and listen to, but mostly my love is in the 90's/early 2000's. I still find new and interesting music now. I never understood those people who got stuck listening only to the music from their high school years. Always seems like they just don't like music all that much to begin with.

I say that Devil's contraption called the Harpsichord lobbed a real carbuncle into what decent men call tasteful music!

I guess for a lot of people listening to music is just something you do while you're busy doing something else (cleaning, working out, etc). So it doesn't really matter that much, or make it worth the effort to find something new.

except for maybe 50 songs the 70's were fucking terrible.

Between Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and the Rolling Stones alone, there are already way more than 50 songs in the 70s that are easily better than whatever you want to put against them.

I would say 90s-early 00s for me, but that's what I grew up with. I do like quite a bit of 80s music too, but that's probably my parents influence.

The good thing about music today is it's easier than it's ever been to listen to anything from any time for a very low cost. Unfortunately this easy accessibility has cheapened the industry, and there aren't a terribly lot of new acts I really like.

The Struts are fantastic though. I hope they keep it up and get huge

Anybody who says good music is no longer being produced: I invite you to listen to Nathaniel Rateliff, Clutch, The Lumineers, The Dear Hunter ... I could keep going.

I saw Nathaniel Rateliff and his band at Red Rocks in August and the place was packed, such a great show.

Music now is as good as it's ever been (minus the previously mentioned 1800-1850 period )
