I got to hear Rudolph Juliani speak at Cornell University's commencement last Saturday. Best commencement speaker I've ever heard, and the first Repub to ever speak at Cornell.

Nothing wrong with it. Very simple, yet very true. It wasn't all proper, but if you listen to what he said, he really hit a very real true fact of life. One thought captured can change anyone's life and maybe change so many other lives for the better. I liked it.

Ever? ZOMG! Cornell was founded in 1868 but didn't host its first commencement speaker until 1984.

Why even bring your half-truth, semi-deceptive political spin into this? Why?

Guiliani may be the first Republican politician to speak there, but many speakers haven't been overtly political at all, this below from The Cornell Daily Sun fleshes out a truer picture about your implied bias:

Between 1984 — when Cornell’s tradition of Convocation speakers began — and 2001, only five of the 16 Convocation speakers had political affiliations.
But hey, I see poster Behind Liberal Lines posted your claim exactly as you worded it over at The Free Republic.

The article you quoted is about last year's address by Nancy Pelosi, not this year's address by Giuliani. Notice that the Giuliani article clearly notes that he's the first Republican speaker and that more than half of the previous speakers have been "prominent Democrats".

Interestingly, the quotation you posted was intended to make the opposite of your own point. The article is about how most speakers prior to 2001 were not political, but in the last decade almost every one has been a Democratic political figure. Hence the reason why it's newsworthy now that a Republican has been invited to speak.

I'm really just not seeing how an innocuous, factual comment about Giuliani being the first Republican to speak is "half-truth, semi-deceptive political spin." I probably would have described the event the same way, and I detest the Hero of 9/11™ and his lame party.

Your second link was not available on-line last night through Google search, but the relevant quote from it completely supports my assertion that "first Republican ever" is misleading, for the very reasons I asserted:

1. "First Republican ever" fails to mention that Cornell, estbalished in 1868, has only had outside commencement speakers for the last 26 years, since 1984.

2. The good quote, from your link, is careful to say Republican politician, since just saying "Republican" is misleading since nearly half of all the speakers have not been politicians and some could well have been Republicans.

Here is the quote, again from YOUR link. See how much more accurate and less misleading than "first Republican ever" it is?

Giuliani will be the first Republican politician to speak at Cornell’s convocation since the annual tradition of hosting a guest speaker began in 1984.

There is a reason when you are sworn in for jury duty they insist you tell "the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth."

He was the first republican ever to be used as a speaker. Nothing you've said has proved that statement to be false. Your bolded arguement is no better than what you're argueing against. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Perk, please, for once on here COULD YOU STOP ATTACKING ME?>???

Guiliani HIMSELF said he was the first republican EVER to speak at Cornell's commencement. HIMSELF! That is what I posted here. The words from his mouth as I found that fact interesting.

I am sure you investigated it by looking up the Cornell Sun online hoping you could post otherwise and then call me a liar. Guess what? I don't lie, and I never have. I have no reason to. No matter how hard your mission is to prove otherwise. Make no mistake I was at Cornell University's commencement/graduation last weekend!

Go bark up another tree. You look foolish here.

The Guilani speech was interesting though you have to admit. While I didn't listen to the whole thing (was doing lab trials) it was definite that he was trying to get a message across, politically. It wasn't the standard run of the mill graduation stuff. I think he was trying to hint about the presidency.

You attend Cornell?

I was thinking he was going to announce his intention to run for the presidency there too. He did say something about trying to keep the voters happy.

And yes, all these political speakers throw in some of their political views, but I did like his leadership steps. A true leader is going to make the tough decisions even if there isn't a plan in place.

Not as a student. I head over to work and help out on girlfriend's lab research.

There were a crudload of people. At first I didn't know he was going to be there at all, explained where all these folks came from. He did put up a great ceremonial speech.

I can't believe I made it through that whole thing. He talked for 12 minutes, and basically said nothing of substance.

And we all know politicians never lie, especially one as honorable as Giuliani.
