I never liked Dawn of War series, not sure if it's the blocky graphics or the theme of the game.

Not sure where you get blocky graphics from with DoW1, it's expansions or 2.

I suppose if you don't enjoy Sci-Fi RTS games or more specifically the Warhammer 40,000 universe then you might not like Dawn of War

The worst game that I have played this year is probably Sniper Ghost Warrior. Not only were the game mechanics awkward, the plot wasn't any good either.

Master of Orion 3. It was so awful I'd have felt ripped off even if someone *gave* me a copy. It felt like quicksilver/infogrames folded about 1/4 of the way through development, and they just shipped whatever compiled as a last ditch money grab.

That was the last game I bought without reading reviews or playing a demo first.

This is my personal worst game also, and I too was stupid enough to buy the thing without playing a demo. I once "won" the game simply by clicking through turns without actually doing anything.

I really liked Borderlands and Dawn of War (I/II), and mostly liked Aion, Age of Conan and Assassin's Creed II. That anybody can say these games are the worst games ever really underlines how different PC gaming preferences can be.

Worst game I remember playing this gen has been Far Cry 2. Every part of the game just frustrated me and I couldn't get more than 5 hours into it. It's hard to think of the worst game I've ever played, but as a child I rented or was given a ton of shitty SNES games. I remember Felix the Cat being especially hard and terrible.

At the risk of getting flamed/being called a troll:

Resident Evil 1. Actually it was the REmake for the GameCube.

Two reasons:

1. Controls
2. Camera

Both so bad they rendered the game completely unplayable. It may as well have not loaded. It doesn't matter how great the rest of the game is if you can't actually play it.

The controls and camera in that game are supposed to be crappy.

I don't recall anyone saying that AC 1 or 2 was the worst game ever, I did say it sucked though. Mostly because of the disappointment factor of Ubisoft taking a cool idea and making a boring game out of it.

I actually don't buy many really crappy games anymore, as I've gotten fairly good at detecting what I won't enjoy or I wait until they are really cheap. If I buy a B-list title for $5-10, I really don't complain about it being less than awesome because I pretty much assumed that going into it. If you spend $50+ on a game close to release you want it to be good. Especially because you and I both pay sales tax on Steam games.

Probably the worst game I've purchased in the last year for full price that was really not very good was Wolfenstein. It wasn't horrible either, just kind of stale and imaginative.

Going back a long way. S.P.Q.R. Puzzle game in Ancient Rome...boring, all scenery, no Romans. I usually wait awhile before buying games (wait for reviews and player opinions) I would have to add Bioshock simply because of all the bugs and constant crashing to the desktop. Halfway through the game, I could not progress to the next level. Gave up, a waste of $.

Other turds - Saints Row 2 was atrocious. It ran like absolute garbage on my old E8400 @ 3.6Ghz and a GTX260. Ugh, and it looked like garbage despite the awful framerates I was getting. I really wanted to like this game too, I was down on GTA4 (it was missing everything fun from the GTA3 games) and wanted a game that restored the lunacy to an urban sandbox game. Ugh, the controls sucked (almost par for the course in this genre) but the graphics and constant stuttering despite awful visuals were too much for me.
This! Saint's Row 2 is a good game, but how did they fuck it up so bad? Even with the lowest settings it would run slower than Microsoft Powerpoint.

Older games? Hexen. Hexen is the worst piece of shit ever. It's basically a shooter game where you don't shoot. You just use your sword or axe for the entire game.

Another horrible nightmare of a game was System Shock 2. It's basically like Hexen but instead of punching things you use a wrench. It's so boring that it's virtually unplayable.

MOO3 = end of thread.

It would be like as if the developers of Duke Nukem Forever, after 12 years of development and huge amounts of hype, released a remake of the original Duke Nukem 3d but using the Doom engine. But was completely buggy and literally unplayable, and never patched.

Honestly how did Atari/Infogrames get away with not getting their asses sued over MOO3?

I'm aware of that argument. My point is that you can make a game scary without making it impossible to control. Also the inventory system in that game is fucked. I know, all part of the plan. Again, they don't have to mess with the game mechanics to make it scary.

Actually, the bad controls and camera made it less scary because they convinced me the game was not worth playing. It felt like the game was cheating. So I had nothing to lose by turning it off and giving it to a friend who would enjoy it.

You hate Hexen and SS2....noooooo! I love those games. How could you hate a game that had a staff that fires homing attack ghosts and poison gas bombs?

I never got that far. Played both games for about 3 hours then turned them off because they were too boring.

That would be in contrast to a good game like Quake where you start with a weapon and get 2 new weapons in the first level of the game.

Metal Gear Solid 2. the one on the oil rig(s)

what a turd.

I remember that one now. It started out pretty cool, but just kept getting weirder and weirder, until the end where I just thought it was the dumbest least believable story I have ever heard. The gameplay also deteriated as the game went on. While I finished the game, I have no interest in ever playing another MGS game.

Taboo: The Sixth Sense. When I was younger I got a gift that was this tarot card game. All it did was randomize tarot cards and read your destiny. I think it was on the original nintendo though, not PC.

It also generated lotto number IIRC. Maybe if I played the lotto when I was 10 years old, I could have won, and the game would have been worth it.

as annoying as it was to be transported away from the Snake character then forced into the role of some pre-teen emo Jap-pop scuba ninja, the story careened into the land of cliche'd tripe (the president's been kidnapped! I mean the president's son has been kidnapped!, I mean the president's son kidnapped the president! I forget most of the nonsense), and onward to hackneyed attempts at what I can only describe as postmodern game/reality constructs--seriously, do you guys remember when the Col started claiming to be a computer virus, and the game itself, i.e, the code, was now your enemy?

it was fucked up.

I've probably played worse, but this one really sticks out as the most poorly-written lazy attempts at a game story that I can remember. The play was certainly OK, but the fact is I didn't care about my dumb emo character.

and yeah, I never played another MGS game because of this one. I seem to remember that it was shortly after this game that the creator was dubbed some sort of design and story GENIUS, with gaming statues erected in his honor. This is when I realized that game producers are populated by some immature, untalented hacks that simply wouldn't know good writing and design if it climbed up their asses and suffocated them. because of this fact, you just know that any other MGS game is going to suck hard, b/c they'll just let them get away with it. The little kids that swallow this shit up aren't going to care, of course, b/c there's shiny images and the ingrained assumption that this is somehow considered "mature."

The story was a little out there but sounds like you didn't get it (or you didn't care to get it). Really though, I'm not judging you because Kojima always tries to make his storylines completely over the top. Metal Gear Solid 4 is proof of this IMO (which is one of the worst games I've ever played).

Stronghold 2. There wasn't really a game in there and full og bugs. MOO3, what a letdown.
The worst game I've played the most is probably Star Wars: Rebellion (Supremacy in Europe). It was shitty game, but for some reason I couldn't quit playing.

Did you play System Shock 2 when it came out or several years later? I know it didn't sell very well but it was considered the game of the year by a lot of reviewers and I personally thought it was really great. The RPG elements were great and the atmosphere was extremely creepy. Bioshock was essentially System Shock 3.

maybe my hardware at the time was lousy, thus the blocky graphics. but when I got a copy of dow2 from a friend couldn't play more than few hours. I play most rts just fine, coh, sc1,2, age of empire series, no problem. i know this game get good reviews, but not my cup of tea for sure.

That was just the cleric. You should have played the mage, he starts out with a ranged weapon. His final weapon was a staff that fired 4-5 explosive heat seeking fireballs! His second weapon let him shoot a shotgun wave of freezing ice crystals. His third weapon he unleashed a lightning bolt that crawled across the landscape and shocked the shit out of whatever it hit.

You could also create minotaurs to fight the enemies. And lets not forget the multiplayer...the game had a magic force push item that let you toss motherfuckers off a cliff, the most humiliating way to kill them.

This fighter did kind of suck though, he had the least ranged weapons and started out with nothing but knuckle duster gauntlets.
