as annoying as it was to be transported away from the Snake character then forced into the role of some pre-teen emo Jap-pop scuba ninja, the story careened into the land of cliche'd tripe (the president's been kidnapped! I mean the president's son has been kidnapped!, I mean the president's son kidnapped the president! I forget most of the nonsense), and onward to hackneyed attempts at what I can only describe as postmodern game/reality constructs--seriously, do you guys remember when the Col started claiming to be a computer virus, and the game itself, i.e, the code, was now your enemy?

it was fucked up.

I've probably played worse, but this one really sticks out as the most poorly-written lazy attempts at a game story that I can remember. The play was certainly OK, but the fact is I didn't care about my dumb emo character.

and yeah, I never played another MGS game because of this one. I seem to remember that it was shortly after this game that the creator was dubbed some sort of design and story GENIUS, with gaming statues erected in his honor. This is when I realized that game producers are populated by some immature, untalented hacks that simply wouldn't know good writing and design if it climbed up their asses and suffocated them. because of this fact, you just know that any other MGS game is going to suck hard, b/c they'll just let them get away with it. The little kids that swallow this shit up aren't going to care, of course, b/c there's shiny images and the ingrained assumption that this is somehow considered "mature."

I never played MGS2 but I have heard all those complaints about it. The story in all MGS games is completely pulled out of Kojima's ass, made up as they go along.

MGS3, though, did do a lot of things a LOT better than MGS2. For starters, you play as Snake the entire time. Therefore, you are a badass the entire time. Not a pussy little girly man like Raiden (the Japanese sure love their androgynous heroes). And while the story is still really convoluted, it's at least grounded in the Cold War so you have a familiar backdrop.

There are still a lot of WTF moments, though.

maybe my hardware at the time was lousy, thus the blocky graphics. but when I got a copy of dow2 from a friend couldn't play more than few hours. I play most rts just fine, coh, sc1,2, age of empire series, no problem. i know this game get good reviews, but not my cup of tea for sure.

Each to their own.

I know I dislike the modern CoD's, BF games and WoW but they are liked by a significant proportion of the gaming community.

Different strokes for different folks as they say. This thread is a great example of that... just very shocked that imo the best RTS of the past few years and possible 2000-2010 ended up on this thread.

I'm aware of that argument. My point is that you can make a game scary without making it impossible to control. Also the inventory system in that game is fucked. I know, all part of the plan. Again, they don't have to mess with the game mechanics to make it scary.

Actually, the bad controls and camera made it less scary because they convinced me the game was not worth playing. It felt like the game was cheating. So I had nothing to lose by turning it off and giving it to a friend who would enjoy it.

Dude, you realize this is what ALL of the Resident Evil games are like, right? (Well, except for the couple newest ones where they've taken the more action-oriented approach instead of pure survival-horror.)

The controls may take some getting used to after playing other 3rd person games, but they're actually quite simple, and they make sense. The non-relative directional controls and static camera angles work together this way because otherwise it would be extremely annoying if you controlled it like with any other 3D platformer, and suddenly your character randomly changes directions just because the camera angle changed too. (i.e. you're pulling the analog stick toward you to move your character forward, but then suddenly the camera changes and he's moving off to the side.)

These things became a staple in the Resident Evil series, and with stationary camera angles, the game is able to show extremely detailed, realistic, creepy environments simply by using pre-rendered backdrops. This is why Resident Evil remake is one of the prettiest games for the Gamecube - all of the processing power is used just for rendering the characters and the lighting/shadows. The environments are just pretty 2D pictures cleverly posed to create a 3D, cinematic environment.

As someone who has played all the way through it multiple times, it's a very neat experience. And it's still one of the best-looking games I've ever seen, just because Capcom "cheated" with the graphics.

Yeah, I know all of those things and I don't care. RE4 was the only game in the series I really liked. I'll take slightly worse scenery graphics over bad controls.

I never got into the whole my character moves inhumanly slow thing in the resident evil games. Not only did the slow movement heighten tension it also pissed me off and made me stop playing.

Seeing as how this game was 29gb's to download I figured I better at least finish it so I can delete this hog. I'm now on the star destroyer part, and it's the worst part of the game yet. They could not have had any play testing on the PC because this part is impossible with a mouse. You can't direct the stupid ship fast enough with a mouse so you can't move forward is this stupidly improbable part of the game.

I can rip a star destroyer out of the sky but I can't just use the force to break a few parts in the rail gun I'm trying to blow up.... Nope, I'll just pull this billion ton ship out of the sky instead. I think that the secret apprentice is a water head. It's obvious.

A freeware game called Virtual U is the worst I ever played. It's a higher education faculty simulation game... which is even less fun in reality that it the explanation sounds.

There is a good reason this game is free... no publisher in their right mind would try to sell it!

i can't say there have been any truly bad, completely disastrous games i've played. however:

titan quest was a bit of a chore to get through.
bioshock i never finished, i just didn't find it that interesting.
assassin's creed 1 got too repetitive. i think i stopped after the 3rd or 4th assassination

Assassin's Creed. Got the sequel as a free bonus a couple months ago, tried to play it but had no idea what was going on... so bought the original on sale last week and have been trying to play it for the past few days. Horribly clunky control system, terrible combat, and mind numbing repetition - the entire game consists of repeating about 4 tasks over and over a couple hundred times, with the occasional cutscene to advance the plot. It boggles my mind that it is/was apparently so popular.

I'm most of the way through the game now and I would like to finish it just to see the plot... but I got so frustrated with it today I'm giving up for a while.

Worst game I ever played was Lock On: Modern Air Combat for PC. The game that started my Ubisoft hatred. Fully patched and on a system that exceeded the recommended requirements (not the minimum), it ran like a slide show.
As a former hardcore flight sim geek, in fairness to Ubi I'll say that that is (or at least was) pretty much par for the course in the hardcore flight sim world. Take for example Falcon 4.0. Released in 1998, but there weren't really systems capable of running it at anything close to max settings with acceptable performance until dualcore CPU's started to show up (2005-ish).

gamerankings.com says Charlie's Angels is the worst game ever and American McGee's Bad Day LA is the worst game on PC. I haven't played either of those but I happen to know the Yaris game that was free on XBLA was the worst game ever and is no longer in existence.

Unreal Tournament. Remains my least played game of al time. Bought it full price, got sick of it after 2 hours, pretty much never went back aside from a few half-hour sessions here and there.

i can't tell you how many times i played the assault levels - especially overlord. UT99 was the greatest ever. the rest of the series just went downhill
