Worst PC Game you've ever purchased

For me it's no question, easily the worst game I've personally ever purchased was this turd:

I played the shit out of the original Pools back in the day, so I was stoked when I saw this was coming out...hard to believe it was 10 years ago. Anyway, the main problem for me was stability. This was easily the least stable game I'd ever played. Crashes; corrupt saved games; after weeks of banter with "support" (even their forums were unstable) I finally uninstalled it and never looked back.

I vowed I'd never purchases another Ubisoft game and so far I've kept my word.

Whats the worst purchase you'll admit to, and why was it so bad?

For me, it was a spontaneous buy of a game called Heroes of Annihilated Empires. It was supposed to be some fantasy RTS. The problem was, I couldn't get through the first mission of the game because it crashed at the same place every time.

Wow consider yourself lucky if that is the worst game you've ever bought. DA:2 wasn't particularly terrible, just disappointingly mediocre.

I'd have to say Master of Orion 3 or Spore. There might have been worse but MOO3 in particular was awful.

Probably Warhammer: Online. It's not completely terrible, but I'm pretty picky about what I buy.

Dawn of War 2 vanilla. Talk about boring and repetitive single player campaign and laggy multiplayer.

Another would be Mass Effect 2, I bought into the hype and got the game, not knowing that it's no longer an RPG.

Aion, wanted to try something else besides WoW, and this game made me realize why WoW is the dominating MMO.

Crappy graphics, no accelerated 3D, no surround sound. Your character could hardly move when encumbered with too much loot. Luckily you could fix that since it was written in basic and wasn't compiled.

I'd have to say Master of Orion 3 or Spore. There might have been worse but MOO3 in particular was awful.

I don't buy games all that often, I stick to things I know I will enjoy. DA2 was a box of crap compared to DA:O. If a game is worse than DA2 I usually know/find out just by looking at it, so I don't even consider buying those types.

Ultima Online (original release): I ran out and bought this the day it was released. I loved Ultima 7 and the graphics were similar, with the thought of playing on line I could not wait.

Ugh. The lag was out of control (and I had a reliable direct Internet connection on my big 56k modem-- which was high end at that time), PKs ruled the land making for no fun, combat was terrible, the thing was an absolute mess on release. CGW still gets a huge thumbs up for having the balls to call UO in its original form what it was: "Coaster of the Month." Back then you could return PC games to Electronics Boutique, which I did promptly.

I understand it was fixed and has changed considerably since then, but there was no excuse for its state at the time. From what I hear it is even a fun game.

Blasphemy! Yes it was laggy but that's the way things were back then and we liked it!

But that reminds me. Ultima 9. The game was literally unplayable. It was so unplayable that Origin/EA released a replacement DVD with all the patches and mailed it to everyone who registered. It was still unplayable even with the patches.

Sins of a Solar Empire = Excellent

Aion at launch. It was the buggiest POS software at launch I've ever had to deal with. The game itself was pretty good, but the crashes during raids were just awful to put up with. It did get better over time however and I played it for several months following.

Yeah my thoughts exactly. I mean, people complain about ME2 being not as much of an RPG as the original and therefore the worst game of all time, lol. There are several games that were completely broken and unplayable in a technical sense, like MOO3 and Ultima 9.

OP asked what's the worse game I've bought. That game is Dragon Age 2. It was a letdown of epic proportions compared to its predecessor.

I have high standards for games. I don't just buy them because they're on sale or cheap, I buy them because I want to play them and believe they are worth the money. DA2 was one of the very few times I've been wrong about a game.

I agree.

Some truly bad game purchases I've made were Daikatana and Trespasser. Both games I paid full price for at release. I believe each game retailed for $50. I keep them for the novality of it. Trespasser was ahead of it's time in terms of its design. And Daikatana... what more can be said of it?

It's a subjective question. Some people might not buy many games and so they're selection is much smaller.

I will agree with the sentiment that DoW2 was boring as shit to play, especially compared to the original DoW. They changed it from being an RTS to a squad-based sci-fi Diablo where you just romped around the same few maps collecting loot and fighting slightly different bosses. Maybe the expacs are better, but the sour taste that DoW2 left in my mouth prevents me from spending anything more than $5 on those.

That's fine if your opinion wasn't influenced by the multitudes who jumped on the DA2 hate bandwagon at the time of it's release. I played the game without any preconception and find that the majority of it is truly enjoyable. There are certainly questionable design decisions, but that doesn't totally distract from the overall package.
