My lady friend has an AMD Athlon XP 1600+ with an ECS K7S5A and 512mb of Geil value ram (PC3200 running cas 2 at PC2100). It's running nicely, but I just noticed in the hot deals forum that there is a CPU/mobo deal going on at Outpost. It's a sempr0n 2500+ (1.75ghz, 333mhz FSB) chip paired with some VIA KT333 board for $75 shipped. I figure I can sell the AXP and ECS board with the copper coolermaster HSF on it for $50 to someone, leaving me with an expense of $25 for the upgrade. With the $25, I'd get a faster CPU by 350mhz, core improvements (palomino vs. thoroughbred), and a bit of extra bandwidth due to being able to run at a higher FSB. In addition to that, I'm getting a slightly more updated feature set (not that I think she'd even notice ). She doesn't do much with the rig as it is...so technically she doesn't even really need this upgrade, but I figured it's only $25 and will help longevity, right?
My trigger finger is itchy for this pocket change upgrade. Might be fun. What do you guys think? Worth the hassle and adventure?
Anyone have this combo?
If so, how is the board? Are there any tweaking options available in the bios?
