Worth upgrading from Haswell i5-4670 to Ryzen 1700?

Gaming? No but if you run engineering softwares, run virtual machines, and compile codes like me then yes. Softwares like android studio on my dual core laptop runs like molasses. How I wish I have more cores with bigger GHz.

SC2 is ridiculously CPU limited it's not even funny. I wish Blizzard can optimize the game better so it'll use up 2 or 4 cores for CPU processing. Even the fastest i7 has trouble running the game at max details under ridiculous fights.

For what it's worth, it appears SC2 may be memory limited as well. A Reddit post indicated the significant increase in FPS obtained by overclocking the RAM.

Do you have any links on these updated reviews? I haven't seen any updated reviews from the usual sites I visit. In fact, I don't think tech review sites upgrade their reviews to reflect driver and optimization updates made by the computer or game manufacturers... I rarely see them on AnandTech and Hardware Canucks.

Yea, there have been a lot of anecdotal posts in these forums, and a lot of unproven speculation that Ryzen will be better at some magical, unknown future date, but not sure there is much objective data to back any of it up. As for cherrypicking games, Fallout 4, SC2, and TF2 are all very popular games. Citing results for them is no worse the the innumerable BF1 results being posted to "prove" Ryzen's superiority in other threads.

No, using SC2 for anything is silly, other than legit proof that a new chip is super duper awesome (and it would honestly surprise me). The game is notorious for being unoptimized. From Q8400 to Phenom 955 to 2500k to 8350 to 4790k, over seven years now in my experience. I'll have to give it a shot when I finally put together my 1700 system just for the laughs.

I think SC2 is a single thread/highly intel optimized game, OC'd g3258 did well there

I got over 100 fps running TF2 on an A10-7700k using the iGPU. Can't wait to see those benchmarks. Gotta see who can get 500 fps first!

It is a bit ridiculous. I saw an SC2 bench posted recently trying to show Ryzen in a poor light, and the i7-7700k @ 4.8 GHz barely broke 60 fps average. Didn't even hit that for a minimum.
