Assuming you are a gamer and after reviewing the rig spec'd in your .sig, yes another 7800GT and doubling RAM will give more for your gaming than any new CPU over the next year or two.

I'd say wait for Conroe cuz you got plenty under the hood already. And yes, upgrading your vid card will do more than getting a better/faster CPU.

Edit: We'll probably see early previews from websites in the June/July timeframe though. The first 3 iterations of Conroe are due in late Q3 (Jul-Sept), but the most recent word I've heard (keep in mind that this is rumours from Intel employees) is that Intel will be taking their time on the ramp. That means that (just like we saw with Prescott) there will be a limited supply until late in the year.

I honestly don't know I've only ever bought used components or stuff that has been out for ages...i'm a student and money isn't exactly coming out my ears What i do have tends to be spend on going out with my gf, or to the pub with my mates

Prices for gfx cards are just crazy, other stuff is reasonably comparable...

Yes...we get :beer: early, that's about it! To give you an idea of how bad it is, HP Australia has only had the DL585 and DL385 for the last few months...and they have been HP's largest selling Enterprise servers for the last year.

its twice as bad in the graphics card industry where advances come so quickly that by the time a card is available in store the benchmakrs are jsut coming out of the other companies new card that demolishes it in every aspect.

Basically just look at what you need and get the cheapest thing you can find that meets your needs, or alternatively, figure out how much money you can spend, then get whatever is the best in that price range. Waiting for a new card or processor only makes sense in some certain situations. If you need a computer now its not gonna do you any good to wait 4-6 months to get a Conroe. If you already have a good system then you might as well sit on it till its outdated, maybe Conroe comes out and puts your rig to shame, so you buy that. If its just a bunch of Intel marketing then jsut sit on what you got till something better comes out in your price range. But there will always be something better coming, so if you just gotta have the best there is you better get a d@rn good job, casue that'll cost you some serious $$$ to always be on the bleeding edge.

I'm in the same boat as you and I've decided to wait until Conroe... so I can buy an X2. I've got a decent investment in a board and RAM, why toss it all out? When Conroe comes out I will look for a used or cheap X2. The work I do would definitly take advantage of dual cores.

If you want to upgrade in the future, there is no point in buying 1 gig of ram and a dual core processor now. If you want to upgrade now and will be content with this system for 1.5 years or so, it's not a bad idea. 2x512 ram goes for $70 nowdays. If you don't need dual core today though, there is no point. It wont increase framerates in games. A 2nd videocard will be better if you find your gaming experience sub-optimal for your resolution/IQ.

1) do you guys know how long Intel plans to support socket 775? If conroe will scale to 3.6ghz+ before they switch sockets?

I think them switching chipsets isn't a big deal since 965 will support DDR2-800 and it's probably likely it can be overclocked to 1200FSB from 1066. Switching sockets though would be another story

2) Isn't Intel getting rid of Parallel ATA support on i965 and on? Hmmm....That would be unpleasant to throw away perfectly good ATA HDD and DVD/CD-Writers..
