I've got two "servers" here at home both running older nocona era xeons. I was thinking an upgrade to some low end amd dual cores or intels that might give the same or more cpu for less power draw.
Server 1
Supermicro server board single 2.4ghz ht xeon with 4gb ram, 1 250gb drive for OS and 4 x 500gb raid 5 array
role : file server, backups, 1 linux vm proxy server
Server 2
Asus NCCH-DL with dual 3.6ghz, 4gb ram, ATI agp card, dual 250gb hd
role : VM server for infosec testing.
Is the cost for upgrading to possibly a frys amd/mobo combo worthwhile?
They have an amd 1650 single core for 80 and an amd 4850e for 100
Any thoughts on retiring these? I'm guessing these old Xeons draw some power and put out some heat. The file server is on 24 x7
