I've got 1GB of PC3200 on my P4P800 w/2.8C P4. I can get a "good" deal for a couple more 512MB DIMMS that are identical to what I already have. Note: Good deal does not equal free... probably about $100CDN each (usually sell for about $130).

Worthwhile or useless? I usually play FS 2004, IL2 FB and Battlefield 1942/DC.

By the time 2GB of ram becomes useful... the current speed of DDRs now would be obsolete already.

well, most games today installs no more than 1.5GB of data into your hard drive, so it'll be a long time before there's any use of 2GB ram. by then your CPU wouldn't keep up and you'll have to upgrade anyway.

but you might be able to make your game load faster, I've heard of utilities that would let your set apart some of your RAM to act as a hard disk so you can load your game into the RAM and run it from RAM instead of the much slower hard drive.

1 GB of ram would make a big difference for me in bf1942 over my 512, heck 1.5GB would be nice to have some headroom, however i just dun got the money. 2 GB is a bit overboard if u ask me unless u can easily afford it.

I agree that by the time programs will use 2GB of RAM you'll be upgrading the rest of your system anyway.. I wouldn't buy it.

what else could you buy for the price of those chips?

i've heard some p4 m/b work better with 4 matched dimms?

1gb is about max for current gaming. i have no clue how big a hog doom3 or half life 2 have potential to be, but idoubt they'll cross 1gb.

2GB for gaming? Not a chance in hell would I waste my green.

Now if you did graphics, video editing, and heavy multitasking...

Yeah, I voted save your money but I think you'd see a performance change in games for the worse. Running 4 DIMMs is slower than 2 on this board, assuming you can run 4 dual channel (make sure on the Asus web site). I have 512MB, and I'm reluctant to up it to 1GB for that very reason. Plus heat build up if you run a high VDIMM like me. Yeah, you'd almost certainly see a change in performance in games.

Exactly...buy a faster CPU or some nice flashing neons or something.

Scsci Harddrive...

I would rather have 1 gig +scsci than 2gig + IDE

Sadly I have neither

Same here on both counts.

Bernse, the 2GB would help you a lot if you have a tendency to want quick sessions of BF1942 while working with Dreamweaver MX, Maya, Photoshop, Premiere, and Soundforge (all at the same time, running in the background while you game). Otherwise, it's not worth it.

That is about it. I don't know how much ram professional 3D artists use,but I doubt you work for Idsoftware anyway ; ) .

I don't think that really has anything to do with why he wouldn't need more RAM.

Seriously...haven't there been like a dozen threads about this very same thing lately? I don't understand why everyone feels they need everyone else's approval to do this. Up until a few months ago I had 512MB. Now I have 1GB. I'm planning on adding another GB sometime in the next 6 months. Why? Because I can, and it won't hurt. Plus I tend to have a lot of things open at once. It all comes down to what you're doing and if you feel you can afford it. I don't think it's fair for one person to say it's a "waste" any more than it is for someone to say it's absolutely necessary. Obviously, if it's a budget decision then the answer is clear: don't. If it's not, then get it if you want. I won't think any less of you.

Actually some games do make use of the memory. DAOC did or will soon implement a texture caching scheme that will use main memory to store textures so the game engine wont have to go looking at the slow ass disk. My game machine has 1GB of PC2100 and I can tell the difference in DAOC between 512 and 1GB. BTW to get the full use of this caching they are recommending 768MB minimum.

When I build my new game machine in Jan\Feb with an Athlon64 it will have 2GB of memory in it.

Currently my game machine looks like this.

XP2400@2200Mhz
40GB WD 7200 RPM drive
GF4 Ti4600
1GB PC2100.
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe

This machine currently screams. It will boot up and get into DAOC faster than my Dell Inspiron8200 can get into the game from the desktop.

Dells specs are

P4 1.7Ghz
512 MB DDR PC2100
40GB 5400 RPM drive
GF4 440Go

Three words: Star Wars Galaxies

Blame it on inefficient code if you want, but whatever the reason this game loves memory. I had 512 MB and walking around in Bestine or Mos Eisley on Tatooine was painful. I upgraded to 1024 and it's much better, but still grinds to halt during disk access sometimes. Perhaps a Raptor or SCSI setup would help to alleviate the problem, but I'm curious to see if more RAM does anything.

With the price of RAM nowadays, what could having too much hurt?

Those of you saying 2 GB is worthless, you sound like Bill Gates in the 80s.
