from times immemorium, forum admins and their ilk have tried to keep forum trolls and their ilk at bay. but despite their vigilante vigilance, trolls can and do still spell trouble for a forum. studies have shown that almost every normal person has some innate troll tendencies which are excassirbated by anonymity. and then there are the perma-trolls, trolling forums as a cruel form of entertainment.
since no truly effective safety net has been found, i am wondering if a different type of troll-control strategy would work, one that hits these trolls below the belt - and right in their wallet. there are a couple different methods that could be used either separately or in conjuction:
1. require everyone to pay a fee for using the forum - either a time-based fee (ie full access for a monthly fee), or an activity-based fee (ie buy the ability to make 100 posts).
and/or
2. when people violate a rule and are given an infraction, require them to pay a fee to regain their posting privileges, thus exchanging time for money
do you think use of one or both of these methods this would improve the quality of a forum?
