Would Belinda Carlisle have been as big as she was in the 80s if she had average looks?

sacred? LOL.
I've been a fan of the music and never spent much time watching videos or looking at album covers. Perhaps you should calibrate your sarcasm meter, but I was responding to a thread on a woman's looks at gonadtech. I'll never reply to one of those without sarcasm about the shallower end of the pool.
I suffer from mad fanboy syndrome.

Spent more time on Youtube searching out her old live performances and other content than any other but JoJo. .

I was thinking of the Bangles.

If they got together, would they be GoGoBangles, Go Bangles, or Bangles a GoGo?

Never heard the GoGos take on Our Lips Are Sealed till a few years ago. I like to think the contrast with the Fun Boy Three version (the one I knew at the time) sums up the difference between the US and UK.

Being female, being perceived as "selling out to pop", and singing about less weighty subjects like relationships or a vacation are the three triggers to disrespect from "critics" and the "serious music" segment of the populace(and it appears some rock fans have become "serious music" snobs).

Given there hasn't been another group like them...it's evident the uphill road still exists. Although, it doesn't help that they couldn't stick together due to the individuals in the band basically preying on each other...unlike some male bands where they could stick together even with no personal affinity for the longest time(like the The Who).
How do you mean? There's been quite a few all girl pop-punk bands since the Go-Gos.

One that has had something top the charts while writing their own songs and playing their own instruments.

Their success was barely possible...thanks to IRS Records willing to take a chance on them.

Aha. Topping the charts has been increasingly less relevant over the decades, it's mostly full of fucking garbage at this point.

Can't say it was irrelevant back in the 80s when they broke out, and communication was far more restricted to then brand new MTV and word-of-mouth.

And it was listening to a list of chart toppers that the brief sample of Heaven caught my ear...in part because the chorus sure might have borrowed a Bon Jovi tendency. But...then the fandom of Belinda began for me.

Ironically....I never noticed Mariah Carey when listening to those video lists....

And of course, I'm of the opinion ubertalents can also craft one for the pop charts...just like Beethoven writing the Septet...he wound up hating that own work for the same reasons "snobs" view commercial music these days.

Somebody above mentioned Hoffs was in the same group. She wasn't.

The first group that came to mind when I saw this thread was the Bangles, which Carlisle wasn't in.

I looked up the two and I don't recognize a single track from the GoGos, while instantly recalling several Bangles tracks including Manic Monday and the Egyptian thing.

So, despite the hype, who made a bigger impression?

I actually saw the Bangles live many many (MANY!) years ago in a large nightclub-type place and they were pretty damn good (and sexy!) live which to me is the true measure of musical talent.

Neither band in question here is really my kind of music though.

I prefer the Bangles music to that of the Gogos but both are good. The Bangles first EP is, IMHO, one of the best pop recordings ever.

Gogos by a long shot. The bangle were garbage and manic monday was written by Prince. At least the gogos wrote most of their songs. The bangles wouldn't exist without the gogos.

No doubt that Belinda Carlisle was the difference between these bands and the Go-Go's were better as a result however the Bangles were also very talented.

The show I went to with my buddy in LA back in the day had the Bangles as a warm-up band and they ended up being better then the main acts.

I was very surprised at the time... also I'm trying to recall who the main act was ROTFL but no luck yet.

Bangles were Beatles fans. Beatles were already "old" by then.

Can you recall male or female at least...soloist or band?

You don't recognize We Got the Beat, Vacation, or Our Lips Are Sealed?

There were a whole bunch of bands and I drank a lot (among other things lol!) that night.... the Bangles were near the beginning I can tell you that much most likely why I have a clear memory!

It was mostly local and "pop" type bands that I wasn't really into then or now.

I'll email my buddy and ask him.

I still think they were crazy for not releasing Tom Petty's "Waiting for Tonight" back when it was recorded (tangentially related to the thread because the Bangles did backing vocals)
It wasn't available until the Playback box set a few years later, it was recorded during the Full Moon Fever sessions.

LOL, like the US is like 1000x the more happening place than the UK? Like why the U.S. took over from the U.K. the role of the Earth's number 1 power? ENERGY lolol.....
