Would Belinda Carlisle have been as big as she was in the 80s if she had average looks?

People do ask some bizarrely random questions in this forum. And it's not even a Gizmo thread.

I mean, who cares? "looks" are part of the deal for almost all pop stars (barring some 'novelty' acts), but what's the point in trying to decide the exact degree of contribution in any particular case?

Was she "Roseanne" ugly? No...was she in the top 25% of beautiful women? Also, No.

Well, someone beat me to it making a Belinda thread.

Yes, pretty faces are usually key to commercial success.

But, Belinda Carlisle's voice and talent are legitimate.

As lead singer of the Go-Gos, I would guess the looks mattered less...but at same time I'm not an 80s teenager calibrated to what was "hot" in that moment; at least some comments on youtube vids indicate otherwise.

It's not exactly like she consciously intended her path to singing. She started off basically throwing shit against the wall with her bandmates in the LA punk scene and she defaulted to "singer" because everyone else picked an instrument(apparently). So, about the most challenging road to establishing herself as one.

And she was a hedonistic cokehead with numerous relationships, including a Japanese fella named "Isao". It's all laid out in her memoirs. Her calibration is so deep into the hedonistic she didn't think anything in it was shocking or abnormal. Yes, she did do a little witchcraft and read a tad of the Satanic Bible.

Yes, I did read her memoirs. I also thank Ricky Jeonney's channel on youtube for posting old LIVES of her performances.

And TJ Parker did reply to my comment complimenting his skills in the Runaway Horses VHS.

And no, she doesn't trigger anything sexual in me, even though I can recognize that others would fall "Head over Heels".

And her voice...is would what every Japanese girl tries to emulate to sound "kawaii"...

In fact, Belinda is the reason I'm no longer a weeb. The fuck I need to listen to J-pop and mediocre derivatives like Neon Genesis Evangelion's opening theme when I can listen to the real shebang in "Heaven is a Place on Earth.

And she shares a vocal technique with Mariah Carey. She can activate a "violently gritty" effect that I absolutely love. Maybe trend in Irish females?

She's a LEO. 8th month of the year. Number 8 in China is considered lucky (not for me though. I just had a favorite daily use USB lock itself into read-only mode on 17th August).

Leo girls are pretty naughty.

They do tend to have larger than average assets (prove me wrong by showing me a flat chested female Leo. I'm curious ).

Scorpios seem to love Leos. I think they are compatible coz both are dangerous and have serious weapons (sting/claws). Don't insult either of them. They don't hold back.

Leo girls have a nasty habit of ghosting you, especially suddenly and out of nowhere. There's very little chance a Leo girl will contact you once she ditches you, unless she wants something from you. Then prepare yourself for all her feline charms.
You got a poster of the Clintons or something?

Belinda has superior timbre to Hoffs. And the groups respect each other.
You aren't gonna start comparing her to Chopin or some other classical composer, are you?
No resemblance recognized. She wasn't a songwriter and Rick Nowels/Ellen Shipley were the ones who helped craft "Heaven Is A Place on Earth".

The Romantic composers went on a more abstract, intellectual mode of innovating on Beethoven that resulted in extremely emotional music, but no Romantic could emulate Mozart's sheer ability to make instruments sing like a singer.

Torn Mind, what is "timbre"?

Thanks.

In music, timbre (/ˈtæmbər, ˈtɪm-/ TAM-bər, TIM-), also known as tone color or tone quality (from psychoacoustics), is the perceived sound quality of a musical note, sound or tone. Timbre distinguishes different types of sound production, such as choir voices and musical instruments. It also enables listeners to distinguish different instruments in the same category (e.g., an oboe and a clarinet, both woodwind instruments).

I actually prefer the strings to the winds...and of the winds the oboe was my favorite. Thus, I even prefer Belinda's timbre to Mariah's timbre.

I prefer Belinda's weird combination of feminine, power, and grit voice over the catty voice of Hoffs, even though I recognize Hoffs is a good singer.

Fair enough Torn Mind, fair enough. I dunno who is a better singer, close, but Hoffs has the longevity looking power over the blonde for sure.

Have a good night.

I love the Go-gos. If you analyze each member they are awesome. Great bassist, great drummer, decent guitarist, decent keyboardist. I particularly love the bassist. Even in their most simplistic songs, we got the beat and our lips are sealed, there is some solid basslines. I know a few of them went on to play for other groups in the 80s but they were a solid band who, imo, were overlooked as some schlocky girlband.

Being female, being perceived as "selling out to pop", and singing about less weighty subjects like relationships or a vacation are the three triggers to disrespect from "critics" and the "serious music" segment of the populace(and it appears some rock fans have become "serious music" snobs).

Given there hasn't been another group like them...it's evident the uphill road still exists. Although, it doesn't help that they couldn't stick together due to the individuals in the band basically preying on each other...unlike some male bands where they could stick together even with no personal affinity for the longest time(like the The Who).

There was drama amongst the Go-gos even ten years ago...

sacred? LOL.
I've been a fan of the music and never spent much time watching videos or looking at album covers. Perhaps you should calibrate your sarcasm meter, but I was responding to a thread on a woman's looks at gonadtech. I'll never reply to one of those without sarcasm about the shallower end of the pool.
