Would getting a PSP this late in the game be worth it?

I see on Craigslist often PSP 1000's going for $45-$60. I'd like to mod a PSP to play backups and that's the only guaranteed one to get. I like mobile gaming, but incredibly dislike gaming on a touchscreen.

Is it still fairly powerful for a mobile gaming console?

Never too late to get it. Great system. $45 doesn't sound too bad at all. Ended on a good note with many great games to keep you busy.

The emulator support is what makes the system for me, I would say it's worth it.

The emulators are ridiculously slow for me...

So what, you ended up getting one? What versions and what emulators are you using? I haven't busted mine out for a while, but I'll test and report.

Edit: BTW, I was referring to Snes, NES, Genesis, and PSX ISO support. I don't think N64 works well, but haven't tested much.

PSP is basically between PS2 ans PS1, it's not very powerful.

I'm going to pick one up, PSP3000 while I can still get them new before the only new in box ones are on eBay for $9999.

I'm looking and waiting for approval from the wife

PCSP 0.5.4 doesn't work at all, JPCSP (with all current JAVA updates) runs everything VERY slow. ~7fps to be exact. And Soywiz's PSP emulator is DOA. Doesn't even launch.

I think you misunderstood me. I meant the emulators that run on the PSP itself, not a PC emulator for the PSP.

Yep, I misunderstood you. I loved having emulators on the DS lite. I take it the PSP has far superior emulators?

I would say that its a very good time to buy a PSP, for the hombrew and emulation scene, as well as the fact that most of its library can be purchased at really good prices right now.. (new/used etc.)

I tried getting into homebrew, but it's such a damn headache & it's rare to find anyone who gives a shit about trying to assist you with it.

However I do want to get an extra just for backups & to use xlink kai.

If your PS1 library is as large as mine, it's well worth it for emulation purposes. I'm not exactly keen on plunking down $$$ (through PSN) to play the same game on the handheld, in addition, much of my library isn't even on the PSN, so easy moddability is a big plus for me, and accuracy + visuals in a couple of my games beats out even PC emulators (in pre-rendered titles especially).

My biggest beef with the PSP thus far has been the very horrible ghosting on the LCD, though I heard that's long since resolved since the 3001 model, I refuse to give up the solid frame of the device itself. It's handled more abuse than all my phones put together.

I have quite a few leftover PS1 titles that I can rip to ISOs. For the life of me I cant get ps1 emulation to work on my PC or Wii. Are they extremely accurate on the PSP?

Also, is modding the 1000 difficult?

Thus far with the games I played, I haven't had any issues with odd tidbits and such. The biggest issue would probably be with the fewer buttons on the PSP itself.

Modding the original 1000 was considered the easiest to do so with, depending on firmware version. I think with the encryption keys being found though, it no longer matters what PSP model you have.

Just got me a PSP-3000 from Target, only place locally in stock anymore and they matched walmart.com's $99 price.

Up and running 6.60 CFW PRO B10 within the first hour (never had a PSP before).

These things are obscene grease/oil magnets.

How is the LCD ghosting on P-3000? I have launch day P-1000 and the ghosting is terrible. I read it's improved on P-3000. My concern is how big of an improvement. I would pay $99 to upgrade to P-3000 if I was sure the problem was solved or at least minimized.

There is practically no ghosting at all, but you can occasionally see interlacing artifacts, a trade off of the new improved screen design. I can't give a fair comparison since this is my first experience with the PSP.

A PSP makes a great toilet mate. I use mine to play sonic 2 while taking a shit. Good stuff.

Yes.
There is A LOT of games. Where they support many systems, PSP has the most games on their list. If there is multiplayer lan support, chances are it will work with it.
