Update

I installed a new 1tb ssd, images my c: to it, works great.
Updated my cpu to a new quad core q1950, works great.
Put in the r290,downloaded the driver and ccc. Worked great initially. Played some metro 2033 and after 3 mins sucker got hot and lost video. Changed ccc fan settings but this card shuts down after a few mins of gaming. I have many case fans so I know the case is cool but methinks this card is a lemon.

No, I have a thermaltake and its definitely cool. Mucho fans. The cards fan doesnt listen to the catalyst driver and doesnt speed up, just crashes. Going to try a manual fan control sw.

Should be a beast of a upgrade,i do wonder how much of that 290 you can take advantage of.Hopefully a good bit,but a free 290 can't be beat.If you run into any bottlenecks,simply up a few settings like AA and your ready to go.

I wouldn't let any bottlenecks bother me.

I had an Antec P180, then changed to a $50 budget Raidmax Cobra case. Temps went down 2-4C across the board with the same fan configuration and amount of fans. Many of the cheaper budget cases offer better airflow and configurations than enthusiast cases of old.

How hot did the GPU get before shutdown? CPU?

Don't remember the model but it has like 10 bays, weighs like 100lbs loaded. Big ass fan on the side.

Anyway, I downloaded msi afterburner and set the fan to 60 percent and ran metro 2033 nonstop at max for a couple of hours. Seems pretty stable. Hooked it up to my 50" TV and am enjoying it. Haven't touched the pc in well over 2 years.

If sapphire Trixx will work, it'll allow for a fully customizable line-graph fan profile. 0-25C 10%, 25-45C 20-40%, 45-60C 45-65%, 60-75C 65-90% and any higher 100%. I have a spare 6870 that doesn't like to ramp up fan speeds until 75C.
