Providing that the backorder cleared out and the 7900GTs bceame available through step-up, would it be worth it? I alreayd play BF2 at 1680x1050 all high, 4xAA 16xAF. But games like FEAR and COD2 are just 1680x1050 mid-high details. And I plan to buy Oblivion soon.

I bought my EVGA7800GT for $290 from ZZF on 1/29. So I still have a month to decide.

I read the 7900GT is like a 7800GTX mostly as far as speed. Or was that a 7800GTX 512? I don't remember.

I would guess a EVGA 7800GT performs in between a 7800GT and a 7800GTX since its already clocked a good amount past stock (we'll leave my slight additional overclocking out sicne any card can go a little ways more stil). So i'm not sure if a 7900GT would provide much of a performance increase.

OTOH, being 90nm chips, the 7900GTs seem to have quite a bit of headroom for overclocking. But I don't know if I should pay extra to get a EVGA 7900GT CO Superclock or whatever, in case I could achieve the overclock with the cheapes tone they have.

Opinions?

Of course, I'm 99% sure I threw othe fvcking EVGA box, so this is almost all moot. I have ever other piece included that it came with, still in its packaging, but I got rid of the box after making sure it worked sicne it kinda took up more room that I cared to. I'd lose a whopping 15% off $290 in which case the upgrade would cost $100+ and I HIGHLY doubt its worth that to upgrade. GD box....!!!

if you had the box i'd go ahead and do the step up....

i know that takes off 15%, and i guess what i'd try and do is go on For Sale/For Trade and see if you can buy anybody's 7800GT box. Heck, to get that 15% back i'd give it a try

I am stepping up from a 7800GT to a 7900GT CO Superclock for free. I bought the 7800 for 360$ because of the free mobo, and my credit is 360$, so I got it for free. Anyways, I was able to talk to a tech and I sent in as much stuff as I could and he assured me that I wouldnt be charged the 15%. I sent in the box, card, the plastic "clamshell" (thing that holds the card), 2dvi to vga connectors, the power connector, and one out of the two svideo cable/connectors. I was missing the driver cd, manual, and the additional svideo cable/connector, however the tech said I wouldnt be charged because he talked to his manager and he said it was alright. If I wont and didnt get charged, then you shouldnt have a problem since you have everything but the original box. I expect some noticeable fps increases because its going from 20 - 24 pipelines and from 445 core clock to 550 core clock plus the mem is 1000 mhz to 1580. I am expecting maybe 55 - 65 fps on 1600 by 1200 reso with 4xaa/16xaf instead of the 40 I was getting with the 7800GT. Also if you plan to go with the superclock, I wouldnt expect much overclocking headroom because that baby is almost overclocked to the maximum. default - 450, superclock - 550.

im in the same boat as you. I have till April 14th to step up my 7800gt CO SE that I bought back in January. Looking at the waiting list, and the fact that I dont have a spare card lying around, I think I might just keep my 7800gt. Dont know if its worth the hassle of putting the stock cooler back on, and shipping it all out.

I only play BF:2 and CS:Source right now, and dont plan on buying any other games in the near future so why upgrade?

Might just wait till the 8 series

Good points by everyone. Thanks.

Yeah that makes me wish I would've gotten the EVGA mobo combo instead of separate card + mobo, cause at the time I wanted a better overclocking board and chose an Epox for my Opty 146 but turns out the damn chip doesn't even overclock like most people were getting out of them, so I LIKELY could've reached the same speeds with the EVGA SLI mobo. And I would've saved a decent amount of $$ right then, and it would make the step-up killer now. Fvck.

And I hadn't thought about needing a spare card. I do have my bro's GF4 MX 440 around but that thing is damn near useless for any game I play right now. Not that I game much in a week anyway... so I think I'll just stick with my 7800GT, but the step-up program is pretty cool considering you get your retail price for a used product up to 3 months after purchase. On Ebay I could maybe snag 250-260.

maybe even less. Right now is the time to buy a used 7800gt cause people wanna get their 7900gts. I have been pondering buying another 7800gt for an SLi setup.

But then I say, whats the point? im only playing at 1280 x 1024
