Hey guys and Dolls,,,

I'd like to know if you folks can give me some insight.

I am entertaining the thought of a dual Xeon rig for improving my performance with graphic stuff,,(MAYA< ADOBE< FLASH,,,that kinda stuff)... Yes, I do game from time to time, but it's not what I live for.

With the advent of 64 bit systems on the horizon I considered building AMD but,, correct me if I'm wrong,, the 64 is a good avenue for gamers and is probably not the best choice for a workstation at this time.

Would you be so kind??? give me your thoughts on what would render the best performance for my needs.

THNX in Advance

is it just me, or does it seem like there has been a huge influx of impatient n00bs posting in the GH forums. half the time its threads like these, but the other half is n00bs with under 200 posts spouting out "advice" they think is perfect(which it is far from).

meh...maybe i have just been noticing it a lot more recently...

I don't know what this guy is talking about, he is scared of opteron prices but wants to be foolish enough to spend on a xeon system...

OK ,,,
do you think this belongs elswhere??? this is General Hardware and I'm not here for cookie recipes,,, and I can't help I'm a ''new-B'' I get pretty bussy in real life.

That said I do appreciate the advice,,, I only thought the 64 did better on gaming from an article I read,, but like anything you read theses days it may have been more marketing than true results and I ussullay take it with a grain of salt... That's precisly why I post questions here.
Thnx again

What are your thoughts on overclocking, and how comfortable are you with doing it?

I'm OK with going it. 10 to 15% is what I understand is a safe boost with stock cooling. Ultimately OC will vary in results due to the bin sort process.

I'm not afraid of it,, what are you leaning towards?

If you are looking for a cheap, yet potentially powerful intro into the Xeon world, you should check out the theads devoted to the low voltage 1.6 Xeons. The 1.6's commonly overclock to 2.4 at stock voltage (1.3v), and many of them do anywhere from 2.6-3.0, with the right board. The two threads that come to mind are not long, but they contain a wealth of information. The 1.6's could be the start of a nice setup for you, especially if you are on a limited budget.

One thing to think about, however, is that unless you can get Xeons up to ~3.0ghz, they won't be as fast as lower-end (i.e. 3000+) A64 in gaming (although at that speed, they should be close). But, since gaming isn't your main priority, that might not mean as much to you as how well the Xeons would perform in multi-threaded applications.

Well, if you are looking at (and have the budget for) 3.06 Xeons, then I would suggest you get those. That way, you are guaranteed the rated speed, and you don't have to worry about how well your procs will overclock.

Lastly, for anything dually related, check out the 2CPU.com forums in general. Much as I enjoy the AT forums, 2CPU has alot more information about specific CPU's, mobo's, PSU's, etc. for duallies than there is here.

Mloot ,, the link to 2CPU.COM is great ...

I got a great deal of insight and answers to step mode questions

Thank you so much !!! It would seem the 3.0s are my best bet for the money I'll be spending

Much appreciated
