If I'm doing 65 in a 65 and someone is flying up doing 85 behind me, should I get out of the way? Does it matter that I'm a legal speed and the other person is not?
Yes. You should get out of the way.
Regardless of the speed you are driving, if you are in the left lane, and you are not actively passing anybody, and people are approaching from the rear at a faster pace than you, it is your duty to get back into the lane IN WHICH YOU BELONG.
The left lane is not for cruising. People just can't get their heads around that very simple concept apparently, even when it is taught at every single driving school, and is a part of driving guidelines/laws, at least so far as I can tell... it's nearly universal.
Two lane, three lane, or even four lane (one direction)... it doesn't matter. If you are in the left lane, and there is space in a lane to your right, you are basically wrong. Yes, sometimes it's annoying to hop from right to left back into right and then to left and then right again, so if there is intermittent traffic you are passing but not going all that much faster than them, you'll likely settle for the left until there is a wide clearing. Then you should get back over.
But I have seen so many people cruise at the speed limit, in the furthest left lane (regardless of # of lanes), and there is plenty of empty road to their right. I just don't get it.
Oblivious or trolling on the roads, it's wrong either way.
Don't worry if other people feel like testing/breaking the law - YOU are creating a safety issue, even if following all laws, just because you decide you are *right* and are in the wrong lane at that particular moment.
