Strength isn't going to win a fight like this. In a no rules match if you try to purely outmuscle a trained fighter be prepared to have your trachea collapsed by an arc strike or have your eye literally gouged out.

Not apples to apples. McGregor was at a disadvantage against Diaz (despite the betting line) because he was coming up to make weight which you'd expect to mean his punching power was lower than someone cutting to make weight. For a striker that's really bad. You could see it in the second round when he started to get tagged he voluntarily took the fight to the ground because even though he was severely outclassed by a BJJ fighter he didn't want to risk further damage in a stand up fight.

Of course, all of that is against someone trained to take a punch. In our "average guy vs MMA woman" the average guy is not nearly as good as taking a punch and the MMA woman is a much more effective puncher given their weight. Add in that weight is an irrelevant factor if you're talking about a punch to the vagus nerve in the jaw.

How does one learn to "take a punch"? Roll with the punch, trying to dodge and bob to decrease the likelihood of getting hit, maybe? But you can't train how to withstand a solid blow to the face. The best defense against that is just being more massive than the other person.

So you're telling me a professional striker's punches from a lower weight class are less effective on someone from a higher weight class, even though both weighed in roughly the same.
And somehow a professional female's punches are more effective against someone MUCH bigger and taller, because that person hasn't been trained to "take a punch", keeping in mind that a woman's punch lacks "punch"?

No, he's saying he'd pay to watch Lawler vs Brian Shaw. Read.

I would pay to watch you fight Rousey/Holm/Tate/etc (as per the topic of this thread - nobody gives a fuck about the world's strongest man).

sure you can train to take a punch. same with most sports where impact happens such as wrestling, football and hockey. you get used to dealing with those impacts.

Heck many people say that is one of the big knocks against Brock lesner. he wasn't used to getting punched and didn't deal with it very well.

In all fairness, not only wasn't he used to getting punched...he wasn't used to getting punched by professional heavyweight fighters who have trained heavily for years at punching fellow heavyweight fighters. And honestly, that's not something I'm interested in practicing either.

It's incredible the type of cardio that wrestling takes. It's not the type of cardio that someone has who can run a six minute mile or finish a marathon. That by itself will get you nowhere. It's explosive, all big muscles firing at ones, extreme pain-inducing-through-the-whole-body type of cardio. Training for this type of endurance is actually not very convenient for the typical person, since you can't just go to the gym, lift, and then run the treadmill, etc.

I've tried to explain this to people before. It's just a different type of cardio. We usually do 4 or 5, 5 to 7 minute rounds and by the end of the class, I'm exhausted. Even athletic and fit people that come in for their first few classes gas quickly.

One of the big problems for people that arent used to grappling is the panic of being put in uncomfortable positions. I think this would be a huge issue for a normal person fighting one of these girls if it went to the ground. You can watch the panic and spaz set in on someone when you take their back, shoulder pressure them or start working on a triangle.

Someone like Holly, who is a world class boxer would clown most of us just based on footwork alone.

Not necessarily you, but how about an average sized male with no formal martial arts training?

I'm 6'0, 190 pounds and I've taken a handful of BJJ and MT classes, just enough to know the basics.
My size/strength/reach still gives me the advantage over a 5'7" 135 pound woman, regardless of their training.

Their blows just won't have the same effect on someone with 50% more size, if they can even land a blow due to my reach advantage. On the ground, if they go for an arm bar or choke hold, they won't have the strength to execute it.

Am I underestimating the skill of a professionally trained female fighter?

Yes.

Nowadays? Hell yes...in my youth? Not likely. I was well trained...Tae Kwon Do, mixed martial arts, (combination of judo, karate, kung fu, ju jitsu, street fighting, and boxing) not the same thing you watch on TV) and USMC hand-to-hand combat...and LIKED to fight.
