G71 would probably beat a pair of 7800GTX in FPS. Since a pair of 7800GT are as good as a single 7800GTX 512, G71 should be similar to to 7800GTX in SLI. But unlike the 512s, G71 has 8 more pipes and a much higher core clock. Without the AA/AF, the G71 would win easily. With AA/AF, the G71 won't drop as low as the 512s compared to dual 7800GTs. This is all speculation of course.

From some 3dmark05 scores i've seen (they're not official, and there's a chance whoever said them was stretching them) the 7900 beats the 7800gtx sli. Not sure about the x1900 though and how it compares to other ati cards.

I think it's quite possible because the trend so far has been single new generation cards outperforming dual previous generation cards.

This oversimplifies the situation.

From a pure speed perspective, there are games and settings where a 6800GT/Ultra SLI rig significantly outperforms a 256 7800GTX. More often they're about even.

The 7800GTX did offer advances like transparency AA and better performance above 16X12.

I considered the 7800GTX as offering last gen SLI level performance with some bonuses, but not outperforming it for the most part on newer games.

BTW- I think this will be a similar situation- ~equal performance with some new features.

Even in such situations performance tanks on NV4x SLI after you get past 1600x1200, resolutions that you'd be running at with such high-end setups.

In any case a 256 MB 7800GTX isn't nVidia's fastest single card.

Since the 7900 & X1900 won't be completely new cards I doubt they'll be quite as fast as some folks seem to think, so my guess is no they won't be faster the SLI'ed GTX's, but thats only a guess.

Anyone who doesnt buy a new video card every refresh (me) should wait till G80/R600.

G71/R580 are just stop gaps before the real party begins with G80/R600

No, both R580 and G71 are refreshes, there will not be a large enough increase to dethrone GTX SLI.

G80 (NV50) and R600 will.

blah...haven't had time to read the whole thing, but from what i've read, the g71 seems to beat 2 512s...probably wrong tho

A single new high end card usually beats two older high end cards. Not always, but seeing how the 256gtx was clocked conservatively, and a single 512gtx is already almost as fast as dual 7800gt's, it's likely that the r580 or g71 will be as fast or faster than dual 256gtx's, but probably not dual 512gtx's.

i'd imagine the 7900 beeing close or just below 7800gtx's in SLI... OC it and it should pass them. although its just a refresh, it is one with a smaller production process and a higher clock speed (me thinks they wanna iron out the bugs for the G80) so it should come damned close if not better.

It will certainly depend on the game and the specific settings, but I think that at higher resolutions with eye candy a single 7900GTX will meet or exceed dual 7800GTX'es. I think the main point here is that even if it doesn't quite beat the SLI set and it sells for $700, it's still a better value. I think the setup to have will be dual 7900GT's after they hit about $300/ea.
