If it were possible to go back in time would the government immediately make it illegal or would everyone have the right to go back if they chose?

No...because you would just keep going back in time to when it wasn't illegal

Probably not legal to go to a time when modern humans were alive to avoid any possible harm to our timeline. Having said that, I think it would be awesome to check out the deep sea 100m years ago.

There's a great SF story about this.... can't remember whether it was Asimov or Clarke. One of the two, I think. Basically there was this machine that could pick up on "resonance" of past events and show them to you, and the government grabbed hold of it and wouldn't let anyone use it. These historians got pissed off and conspired to release the plans to the public, and when confronted by the government defended their moral high ground until the government guy reminded them that, while they wanted to use it to look 1000 years into the past, two seconds ago was also the past, and they had just destroyed the very idea of privacy world wide. It was kind of thought provoking.

If something is illegal in your location but not in an other you can just travel to that location and go do that act. Same with time, just need to travel to a time where it's not. The beauty of having an extra axis to play on. Heck, want to do something illegal without moving physical location? Just go to a time where it was not illegal in that location.

But yeah if there really was a way to time travel the government would probably be all over that and if anyone is caught even trying to build or use a time machine they'd probably be sent to maximum security prison. Anything the government fears, they make illegal. Time travel could potentially enable someone to go snoop on what the government did at some point. Ex: 9/11 conspiracy stuff, someone could go in the towers a few days before it happened and snoop around looking for bombs and disprove/prove the conspiracy. Or go further and perhaps even become part of the government, to see if they really knew it was coming. Stuff like that.

And I'll go back in time and erase every single one of those that voted to make it illegal.

Ultimate insider trading.
Ultimate lottery destruction.
There is a nice lottery in Europe having the jackpot at a minimum of 15M.
2 extractions per week, 104 per year.
104*15'000'000= =1,560,000,000euro per year, 2'016'300'000$ per year.
And that's just from 1 lottery. Immagine winning them all for 1 year straight...

I think the idea of time travel is awsome, but the more i see all the different timeline concepts on Shows or Movies, and the older i get... the more I come to think and am now leaning tward the idea that Time travel backwards is probably not possible. I usually never say never especially tward things i dont fully understand, but this one is probably top canidate for actaully never happening.

actually the shallower sea would be far more interesting. Large creatures don't typically do that well in deep sea, the upper areas are where the action would most likely be.

but i agree, just to hear the ambient sounds alone on land both day and night would be really something. The moon would be maybe 50 million inches closer too? or is that miles?

I thought that until I saw this work on warp drive. The thing about any FTL drive is that it can be a time machine as well. So if you:

1. Accelerate away from your starting point (e.g. Earth) at relativistic, but sub-light speed,
2. Engage your warp drive going the other way, and then
3. Turn around and reverse the process to get back to your starting point,

Then you wind up going back in time. So I'm not entirely convinced it's impossible anymore. But I also think this might mean that using warp drive sends you to an alternate universe (timeline) from which you can never return. :\
