would we put all the Chinese in camps if war broke out?

I was joking with my Chinese friend that the U.S. would put him in an internment camp just like we did with the Japanese in WW II. I told him the NSA reads all his messages so he is already flagged and that he should give me all his stuff now.

would it still be good policy to put all Chinese in camps to be on the safe side?

The vast majority of Chinese here are not loyal in any way to the ChiComs. Many come here for a better life for themselves and their families and to make money. Few like to stick out and even fewer are interested in politics.

Great, just what we need. A future generation of George Takei's complaining about their internment on social media for the next 60 years. BAD idea.

According to Justice Scalia... sure.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/feb/3/justice-scalia-to-lecture-at-univ-of-hawaii/

HONOLULU — U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia told law students at the University of Hawaii on Monday that the nation’s highest court was wrong to uphold the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II, but he wouldn’t be surprised if the court issued a similar ruling during a future conflict.

Scalia was responding to a question about the court’s 1944 decision in Korematsu v. United States, which upheld the convictions of Gordon Hirabayashi and Fred Korematsu for violating an order to report to an internment camp.

“Well of course Korematsu was wrong. And I think we have repudiated in a later case. But you are kidding yourself if you think the same thing will not happen again,” Scalia told students and faculty during a lunchtime Q-and-A session.

Scalia cited a Latin expression meaning, “In times of war, the laws fall silent.”

“That’s what was going on - the panic about the war and the invasion of the Pacific and whatnot. That’s what happens. It was wrong, but I would not be surprised to see it happen again, in time of war. It’s no justification, but it is the reality,” he said.

Avi Soifer, the law school’s dean, said he believed Scalia was suggesting people always have to be vigilant and that the law alone can’t be trusted to provide protection.

Soifer said it’s good to hear Scalia say the Korematsu ruling was wrong, noting the justice has been among those who have reined in the power of military commissions regardless of the administration.

“We do need a court that sometimes will say there are individual or group rights that are not being adequately protected by the democratic process,” Soifer said.

Scalia was appointed to the nation’s highest court in 1986, making him the longest-serving justice currently on the court.

The 77-year-old spoke after teaching a class. He didn’t take questions from media.

I highly doubt it. But then again, who knows if it was a really huge conflict like WWII.

The odd thing about Japanese in America before WWII was that they weren't allowed to become citizens. Therefore, no American citizens were put in camps.

We wouldn't put most Chinese-Americans in camps, since many would be American citizens. But then there's Gitmo. :hmm:

People of Chinese heritage are among the ranks of our scientists, leaders, corporate executives, law enforcement, etc. Too important and too influential too lock them all up unless there is some sort of Stalinist purge.

LOL, that would be one dumb government then. Also, posting in a thinly veiled racist thread.

Judging by the track record of our country, will will end up throwing anyone "chinese looking" into detention.

You may laugh, but there are still numerous amounts of people that don't understand the difference between Japanese and Chinese food.

Cue question to Japanese "So you must really like Chinese food! I do too!"

Back in 2001, I was in grad school with many Mainland Chinese students. When the US spy plane collided with a Chinese jet, I got an assload from the Mainlanders about how the US crew should be executed for their part in killing the Chinese pilot.

Chinese grad students in engineering; none of whom I can recall going back to China after obtainining their PhDs; these are the folks you're talking about who came here for a "better life and to make money"; they immediately went all "ChiCom" over the incident.

Lock 'em up!

Unfortunately, too true. There are a lot of people of Chinese descent that is not from China (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.) Plus you'll have to separate the people from Mainland and people from Hong Kong or Taiwan. I have no confidence in the dumb government to handle anything this sensitive.

There is so much racism in this thread. It is wrong If you think no Japanese US citizens were in internment camps. That is just wrong. People are so misinformed.
