Impeachment, by itself, does nothing. You can impeach a president and nothing changes other than asterisks are added to history textbooks. Impeachment doesn't remove the president's powers and thus does not protect "the country from dangerous or incompetent leaders". See Clinton as an example, the impeachment did nothing but give some laughs to the GOP.Sure, impeachment is not about convicting people of crimes it's about protecting the country from dangerous or incompetent leaders.

Only an impeachment + a conviction will actually do anything. That is, unless the president chooses to resign.
Not necessarily. It is highly likely that this will be a long drawn out process. In which case the Democrats could theoretically regain the house and/or senate in the 2018 elections (which seems more and more likely especially if it is a long drawn out process). Thus, it could be the democrats who do the impeachment and/or the conviction. That's not even a fair comparison. In this case it would be Trump's own Executive Branch imprisoning him. We have laws and as Trump himself said during the campaign, noone should be too big for them.
I was pretty confused by your statement "Sure, impeachment is not about convicting".I'm pretty sure everyone is using the term impeachment to include conviction.

Second if shit got too real he'd resign and Pence would undoubtedly issue a pardon
Since people where already making the mistake about pardons actually being allowed, no it was not clear. But thanks for clearing up your viewpoint. While correct, it just doesn't read correctly in the context of the thread. It's not about convicting people of criminal offenses. Since the thread was about pardoning Trump and there's no such thing as a pardon from impeachment, I thought that conviction for criminal offenses was clear.
US Constitution, Article II, Section 2:
"The President shall ...have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment."
Pence cannot pardon Trump.
Nixon was not impeached. He resigned before that. I did clarify my comment though to add "if he was impeached".Yes he can. Ford pardoned Nixon.

Democracy dies the instant that one party tries to imprison the political figures of the other party. It all starts out innocently, imprison a corrupt leader and think you can move on. Then the next thing you know, whomever is in power will imprison any rival and you have a pseudo-dictatorship.
Here is the list of countries that have recently imprisoned the political opposition:
Is this the group that you want the US to belong to?
- Russia,
- Venezuela,
- Taiwan,
- Chile,
- Egypt,
- North Korea,
- South Korea,
- Zimbabwe, and
- Iran.
To this day, the most dangerous thing that Trump has said is to lock up Hillary. Trump crimes or not, we do not want to get into the business of locking up political figures. Get Trump out of power, undo what he did, and move on.

I wouldn't.I would accept a full pardon for all Democrats in Congress in exchange for their resignation.
Full pardon for what? Representing their constituents instead of the Lord High Trump?I would accept a full pardon for all Democrats in Congress in exchange for their resignation.
Full pardon for what? Representing their constituents instead of the Lord High Trump?
Trump de-legitimized himself. Trump's conduct is the issue, not the folks taking note of Trump's conduct. So their constituents are demanding they try to de-legitimize a fairly elected US President and basically undermine the democratic process of the US?

For the People and their elected representatives in Congress to insist that the President be held accountable for his actions is a critical part of the democratic process in the US. Just because Trump was elected does not make him an all-powerful dictator. So their constituents are demanding they try to de-legitimize a fairly elected US President and basically undermine the democratic process of the US?
