Would you be happy with a 1% pay raise?

SunnyD, yeah I was thinking the same. I'm not excited to see what I get after my first year of service. I'm already making places to get the hell out of here.

Every month? Sure.
Once a year? meh... better than nothing. Won't drive me away, but sure isn't helping keep me around.

I would prefer no raise at all at that point so they have nothing to hold over my head when I quit for another job.

Here's a hint when it comes to raises: If you want more than ~3%, be prepared to find a new job.

Anything more than 5% is usually going to be a comp raise in order to retain your services (which means you've probably dropped hints that you're looking elsewhere, or you've brought a competing offer to the table and flat out said "If you want to keep me here's the bar."). Otherwise you just got really fucking lucky and/or did a stupidly good job and some idiot recognized it.

Pretty much what I feel at this point.

0 is pretty dam close to 1 and that's what it should be.

I think if you can give me 1, you are better of just keeping the 1 and using on yourself and buy me lunch from time to time instead.

i always worry about accepting the comp raise after getting an outside offer...it buys them enough time to find your replacement...at which time you're screwed out of both jobs...

i'm underpaid when compared to the market so I wasn't happy with the 6.5% raise that came my way. it still put me at the lower end of the wage scale. but I'll still take it, do my job, and continue to perform better than the average.

I guess it depends on how you approach it. If your current company has to replace you, it is likely going to cost them about the same to bring in someone of your talent + cost them more to train them, so it is worth it for them to keep you.

The best way is to tell them that you enjoy working there, want to continue working there, bla bla bla, but feel that you can't start a family or whatever the reason is on your current salary, and that you've entertained other offers to determine your value.

If, on the other hand, you come in and say "I got another offer and if you don't match it I'm gonna leave", they might be looking for your replacement. I know I would be.

Yes, but that's because I got 5% my first year. They say they "fought" for that 5% (and it's true that the unspoken max is 4%) but I think they did it to keep me happy. Plus compared to the senior guys I'm not that expensive, so my 5% was probably still less dollar wise than their 3%.

I also think they try to keep us single guys happy since it's easy for us to uproot and leave jobs. Once you settle down and get some dependants you'll put up with a lot more BS before you move.

3 year deal.
0% this year.
2% next
X% COL with a CAP at 2% the year after that.

Her local Union Head says it is HORRID out there this year... WORSE than 07/08..
FANTASTIC..
its FUGLY out there. Employers know we are ALL thinking.... Hey, I could be part of that 8%.. (Or whatever the latest number is).....

Sounds like a cost of living increase.

Probably not.

What planet are you on? Cost of living increase would be in 4-5% range

Would I be happy? Yes and No

Yes, because I'm glad to have a job
No, because it hardly catches up with inflation/increase (current day and age)
