I had a job where they tried to give me a 2.5% raise even though I led the region in sales and just about every metric tracked. I declined and said that I would prefer them just tell me I'm not appreciated. He came back with 3%. I put in my 2 weeks notice.

If my current employer offered me 3% it would be ok. I'm just another bump on the wall and we get "cost of living" raises once a year.

In this economy, you take what you can get and be humble about it or be replaced by the hundreds of young, educated, hungry applicants giving their right arm to have your position.

Either a lot of you folk are at the beginning of your career riding the salary increase up or you're oblivious to reality, but for a ton of people these days they're getting 0 or 1 % or 2%. I agree with the sentiment and fact that if you want a serious raise often you just need a new job or at least get an offer for one, tell your boss you're leaving, and see if he makes a counter.

Depends on multiple factors:

- is the company doing well?
- how is your performance?
- how is your skillset?
- where does your pay compare to market?

If the company is doing well and you are below or at market, then that's an insult.

Once a year? meh... better than nothing. Won't drive me away, but sure isn't helping keep me around.

I'm very underpaid for my position as is, so while it would be nice that would also net me all of 25 bucks a month. Screw that, they are pretty much going to have to basically double my salary in the next year or so to keep me on board.


I expect that not to go over well, but if they want competent people they should pay market, and its not like I'm going to get any sort of raise automatically anyway.

I put in a notice at my current place at the beginning of August without another job lined up. I suspect I'll get near a 20% raise.

Take what you learned and find another job with it - a place that needs that particular skill right away. Learn / do something then sell it. Profit!

Here's a hint when it comes to raises: If you want more than ~3%, be prepared to find a new job.

Last time I got a 3% raise I quit the job.

At my current pay? Probably not. I live in an expensive city and what I make now is not the greatest once the government slobs get their unfair share. The cost of living even in the far outskirts has skyrocketed in the last five years. Housing and taxes have gone up substantially, fuel has gone up a lot, auto insurance is insanely expensive, food is going up. Pretty much all the basics. A 1% raise could barely cover half a month's average rent. BUT, it's still better than the 0% I got each year at my old job. I made a lot less there too.
