I have an Asus MG278Q monitor right now. It’s ok. Very fast panel, Free sync is supported but color reproduction is poor. So, I’m looking for a new monitor. I did a little research, some are advising to look TV’s, specially OLED TV’s for this generation.
Min 120 hz and Freesync/Gsync support is must for me. So, I found these three candidates.
  1. LG OLED48CXPUB
This one has a OLED panel and said to have the best color productions, specially blacks. But I never used a 48” TV as a monitor. Does anyone has a personal experience with these big panels? Isn’t it too big to put on a desk and use it at a desktop monitor distance (about 70cm)?
OLED’s are great for movies, games but how good are they for text related work? Like for Excel or Visual Studio?
I can see Ultrawide monitors being useful if you put two apps side by side but is 21:9 ratio at this size good for multitasking Office related work?

2. SAMSUNG 43-inch Class QLED Q60T Series
This one was advised as a cheaper alternative. Reviews seems ok but nothing very positive. 43” is more suitable for computer monitor, I think. But as far as I can see, It supports Freesync.

3. LG 38GL950G-B 38-inch Ultragear Nano IPS 1ms Curved Gaming Monitor with 144HZ Refresh Rate and NVIDIA G-SYNC
This is the monitor I’m thinking of buying If I don’t find other usable. But at 1800usd it’s more expensive than an OLED TV, makes me think it’s a reasonable price.

Do you have any experience with any of these? Which one would you go for?

Any initial impressions to share? How is it better/worse than your previous monitor? Any issues with image retention so far? Are there any quirks that annoy you? Any surprises?

Previous monitor was a Asus PG348Q - 3440x1440 ultrawide 100hz gsync.

I have a OLED C6 TV in my basement for movies - When I got that TV about 4 years ago - the first thought in my mind was "man this tech would be fantastic as a PC monitor". I love the fantastic colors, instant pixel response, and perfect blacks that OLED gives you.

I have had no issues with image retention on either this 55" CX or my C6.

No quirks so far.

Surprises - So I am amazed by the sound quality of the built in speakers. Very clear, and loud if need be. Also I am surprised by how smooth 3840x2160 at 60hz feels. It does not feel like 60hz at all. Of-course 120hz takes it to a whole new level.

Games (Old & New) look stunning on this display. Absolutely fantastic and no regrets at all.

Thanks for the update. I can already see that this thread is going to cost me some money...

Been meaning to post here. Have an E6 on my bedroom I've been streaming to for years using Shield, living room has a B7 that the kids have been abusing and never had anything more then faint IR that went away after about yen minutes(kids leaving a YouTube video on pause for an hour(2,3,4?), very faint and completely gone pretty quickly)-finally found a solution for seating to use an OLED as a monitor(wife let me take over a spare room we weren't using for my "office").

I have a wireless full keyboard sitting on my desk when needed and a MS Elite series 2 controller. I don't use the speakers on the TV normally(HD6xx through a Schiit stack) but my wife does when she plays the PS4 and she says it sounds great(decent sound system in our bedroom and living room so that's not compared to some crappy tv speakers).

This is just a B9, was planning on using cans all along so the E series seemed wasted and this is mainly a gaming setup so I have all processing shut off ergo the C series also wasn't needed. 55" and I used a tape measure, 61" in the forward position, about 68" when reclined for distance to the monitor, just over 5 to 5 and a half feet.

It's gaming bliss. The only downside right now is I'm waiting on next gen graphics cards so I can run 4k 120Hz full bandwidth, most games I just run @1440p 120Hz with gsync on and honestly, with my holdover 2060 it's a good pairing.

I bought my B9 later in the year, had a big nVidia GSync logo on the box and it was immediately identified and a quick checkbox and it was enabled(earlier models required a firmware update and from what I've read it was a mild pain on the first revision).

I still have my desk setup with an older 27" BenQ 1080p 120Hz display, not super high end by any means but it was like $600 when I bought it, certainly a respectable display for its time and it looks looks utter garbage in comparison. The contrast, the sharpness, the vibrancy, even the brightness throttles my old display in every way.

Having the E6 for many years I've done many ten to twelve hour gaming sessions on RPGs with their static HUD elements and never had an issue. This in no way implies burn in can't happen, but if you vaguely acknowledge the possibility I don't find it likely it'll be a issue.

There is no way I'm going back to a LCD as my main display.

Edit-The pictures look like you're looking down way more than you actually are because I was standing above and behind the chair- don't have a wide angle camera on my phone I guess.

I can't imagine putting something over 32" on a normal desk. That's what I have as my center monitor and it's hard to focus on the entire thing compared to my 27" monitors.
40" here and cant think of reverting to anything smaller for PC usage. But should be noted that anything larger than 36-38" should not really be 'placed on desktop', but rather wall mounted just above the desktop. This allows for flexibility in moving your desk a few inches back to accommodate the larger size if needed.

On my point of view i think Samsung Q60T is best, but i would prefer not to use QLED TV as a monitor unlike if you are not a gamer or graphics designer.

I've been using a 55" E8 for a few years now, at a 4' distance. I keep it at a low brightness/contrast (with blank screensaver) in windows and only turn them up in games, and have not had any retention problems. The PC is mainly used for games and media, but is good for occasional web browsing too and text is comfortable to read without any scaling. The only drawback is that it's limited to 4K at 60hz (120hz at 1080p). I may sell it and get a current model (and maybe a 65" one) just for that at some point.

How long do you normally game for in one go? I'm very interested in using an OLED TV as a monitor but I keep hearing about image retention issues if you game for hours.

I usually do 2-3 hours per day, but with occasional longer sessions (6-8 hours) in the last few months due to lockdowns. I play darker games like FPS and space sims at 100/100 brightness/contrast, brighter games like RTS, RPG and racing at 50/75 and Windows at 0/50 (the contrast is actually another brightness setting). Almost all the games have fixed UI elements, and ASBL is turned off on the TV.

Thanks for the info. That doesn't sound bad at all.

Just for those who are interested - I wouldn't get a OLED TV for regular use. Switch to it for games and what not but for regular use - you will experience burn-in well within a year even with anti-burn-in measures turned on...

I know from experience.

Anecdotal experience is hard to believe, we don't know your usage habits and what you consider to be "normal" regular use. Further, we don't know what model OLED you had, or if you followed the proper procedures for burn-in prevention.

Burn-in is an issue to be aware of, but most people shouldn't have any issues in the first 2-3 years of standard normal usage, the fact you're claiming it's obvious within a year tells me your OLED is fairly old and doesn't have good burn-in compensation, OR your particular usage habits are nowhere near the "normal". Or a mixture of all of the above.

What kind of burn-in do you have? Is it the Windows taskbar or something like that? What brightness settings do you use?

I think burn-in can happen, but it's rare and maybe panel dependent. I do know a few others who have been using these TVs as PC monitors without taking any of the precautions I do, and they don't have any burn-in either.

Taskbar. Chrome icon and windows icon is burned in.

I have an LG B7. Not very bright - pretty low if anything.

Not to tell you that you're wrong, but common practice for desktop PC OLED use is to not use desktop icons, auto-hide the taskbar, and use a pure black background and screensaver that activates fairly quickly (at least within 10 minutes of no activity).
It's pretty easy to make sure you don't get that kind of burn-in.

I am using a Q50R TV for my PC monitor. It is fine! I do not play games however. I find it small and will be move it into the kitchen to replace a 1080p 32” Samsung. I eyeing a T60 43” Samsung for a new P.c monitor.

Have to see for myself an Oled big screen for games. Better way to say it is a good Oled for games. Which would be the 48" or bigger CX, and I'll get one in a few months after I get one of the new Nvidia video cards.

But it's not like I never had a Oled monitor. I bought a 30" Oled monitor a few years ago. The Dell Oled 4K 30” Monitor UP3017Q. I fell for the hype and what disappointment for $3000 usd. It doesn't have the visual vividness of some lcd TVs for movies and most games.

In a few games it's very good for the super black background for some space sims like X Rebirth. But to get the colors to look ok you have to tweak the hell out of it. It's pretty good for Witcher 3 too but still not a breakout improvement over LCDs. And if you believe in users calibrating their own monitors to solve the color problems, well the calibrators like the Spyder don't even work on it.

Anyway Dell took a shot at Oled monitors and it didn't work out. Not sure if it's an improvement for professional work, maybe it is. Someone can read about it, but I'm in this for games and movies.

I bought the 48 CX. Did not enjoy it for a monitor so it went back after just over a week. Too many compromises and it’s too damn big. The biggest annoyances were: mirror like anti-glare that’s maybe good for a tv but not for a PC, can’t use 120Hz without the display internally downsampling to 4:2:2 chroma, constant burn in paranoia for static desktop use, color shifting looking around the panel (white balance shifts depending on viewing angle, which would change significantly in different panel areas due to the display size). I was relieved to go back to my 32” 1440p/165 VA panel. Plus now I don’t have to buy a 3080 and can milk my 1070 a little longer. I would like to see what AMD releases after that trash heap of a launch.

I did buy a CX 65 for my TV area as soon as I got home after returning it I’ll wait on the PC use front though. I would not buy another display over 38-40” and would not buy a mirror glossy display.

I hope they fix that issue with 422 downsampling. I was thinking of upgrading to a larger CX and make it more of a home theater setup, but I want proper 4K at 120hz. It will need at least a firmware update. You are right about the white balance shifting across the screen, although it depends on how far you're sitting from it. I tend to game only in evenings in a darkened room, where the black levels and colors stand out best. I occasionally do image/video editing or software development on it (in a smaller window than the whole screen) but mostly use a laptop for that.

Hey @Pandora's Box, you've got almost the same case as I have, so I'm going to ask you a random question:

Do you know how to shut off the LED on the power button of that Fractal Design when it goes into sleep mode? Damn thing constantly flashes, and it drive me nuts because it sits in the hallway off of my bedroom, and lights up the whole area. Very annoying, very bad for sleep....

then again, if you aren't around your setup when sleeping, you'd probably never notice and it would never be a problem, haha.

(yes, I could just pull out the LED pin on the MoBo, but I'd rather shut off the flashing function when it goes into sleep.)

@zinfamous , blinking power LED in sleep mode, is generally controlled by BIOS / UEFI, under Power Management settings. ASRock has one called "Night light", other mobos have similar settings but they call it something different.

I find it hard to believe that you have real burn-in on any type of contemporary OLED, after I was able to fix some serious IR on my 2006 Samsung Plasma, while watching the 2008 olympics for like, 24 hours straight for a week.

The NBC logo was pretty severely burned in for a week or more...but it ended up just being IR because even the archaic tools of 2006 built in to that display were able to fix that.

OF course, I also put the TV through it's ...I forget, 25 hours? of initial priming at low contrast, zoomed in to eliminate typical static graphics on the edges (like sports). etc....

So, I find this dubious, even though it can definitely happen. It sounds like you didn't prime this display and probably left it running 24-7 on some news channel, or like, an airport arrivals/departures screen, haha.

(anyone remember how many of those early plasma displays were used in airports, and burned-in within a week or so?)
