Would you buy a 'Vette?

Keep in mind that I'm a sports car guy who has a "toy" and a practical vehicle so my view may be different than others.

Every now and then I pop on Ebay and Autotrader and check out cars that I think are cool and wonder what will be my next toy.

I can't help but be blown away with how cheap a low mile 405hp C5 Z06 has gotten. Sure, I would have to deal with a generic interior but my god that engine is heavenly and responds well to mods.

For 25k you can get a mint car with 20k miles on the clock.

What other cars offer this kind of "value"?

Wait for the C7 to come out and the prices will come down even more on C5's and C6's.

Corvettes hold their value well but still drop until they reach a certain age. Mine is a 73 and is starting to go up. So keep it for 40ish years and you might make your money back... minus use and upkeep of course.

But yea bang for the buck Corvette's are hard to beat.

Vette has always been known as the 'affordable supercar' or the best 'bang for the buck' value in high power sports cars. Considering that a new Chevy Cruise can cost 25k really puts its value into perspective.
But Would I Buy A Vette?: If I were to buy a toy car that HAD to be a vette, I would go for a pre- 1967 Corvette. Any of em.

for 20k you are really close to a base C6. I would get that over any C5.

I don't know man. I like the sleek look of the FRC C5 more, when the air brakes are down atleast, lol.

Now if it were a C6 z06 I would agree. That slit in the front of the hood and a few other differences over the Base make it look sooo sinister.

I'm not really sure, if I had 30ish grand laying around and I wanted a car like a vette it would be a hard choice between that and a viper for me. I suppose the real question is, will the vette or viper eventually start to appreciate in case of some unforeseen circumstance where I would have to sell it.

if the price was right I would, but I wouldn't see my self owning it long. would probably move on to another car in a year or two

I think the viper market is easily another 10 grand

Who gives a *uck if it's ugly? It runs 10s in the 1/4. Callaways are the business.

Personally I would not buy a Corvette, but I respect them for what they are. I am more an M3 person (which is why I have an M3 instead).

As a Vette owner I would say definitely. They are a bargain for what you get. If you're looking at spending $20-25k on a C5, I would look on the Vette forum for a C6. You can find a few examples with decent miles and Z06 body mods for pretty close to that price range.

C2 or C7.

Was looking at a '64 Coupe a couple of years ago, but I could not get agreement/approval from the wife.

We my be looking at the C7 Stingray later this year.

No because it feels like driving a bath tub with even worse ergonomics than an actual bath tub.

I'd rather buy a 911 or even a Boxster

I'd buy a C2 if I could get a really good deal on it (...and I had money).

I'll be devil's advocate here and remind you than a C5 or C6 with 20k is probably going to feel like a 'normal' car with 100k. As far as body and interior are concerned, at least.

I'm sure the engine and driveline would be solid, though, assuming someone hasn't been neutral dropping or clutch side-stepping its whole life. Not sure about the chassis/suspension...when do guys normally have to start doing under-car work on those? I haven't ridden in many (come to think...any?) C5's, but the VERY solid nature of the C6 would make me say that I doubt suspension parts are going to wear very quickly. Your ass takes the abuse, rather than suspension bushings and such.

For <30k for a late C5 or early C6, it's a good toy. And probably fairly cheap to maintain, other than tires.

If you go cruisin' for ladies, avoid road head unless you want it bitten off. :awe:

Why do you say that? The interior certainly isn't the most modern or sexy but I haven't heard about it wearing out sooner than other cars. Vette owners are some of the most meticulous you'll meet so I'm not sure why you think Vettes wear out 5x faster.

Still haven't found a kit to wrap all the Fisher Price plastic interior with leather or alcatara, so no.

$25k buys you lot of car in the used market. But I wouldn't pay $25k for C5 Z06. Maybe $15k.

It's not 'wear out,' as in seat covers coming apart or something. It's the rattly mess the car quickly turns into. I'm sure to some, I'm 'just hatin,' so to speak. But I'm just willing to acknowledge the bad along with the good.
