in all fairness, my op was about a $25k C5 z06

True. The price difference between a C5 Z06 and a base C5 isn't that great so the Z06 makes more sense.

Sure but what percentage of Corvette owners have bad knees? Oh wait, they're all old guys so probably a big chunk... but of course those old guys are from the musclecar era when everything was automatic and they buy Vettes for status anyway.

Don't you think that's just a wee bit of an over-generalization? I'm sure a lot of people do buy the Vette for status but there's a lot who buy it because it's just a fun car.

Some other reasons for an auto are better times at the dragstrip or a long bumper-to-bumper commute.

I agree that manuals are more fun in general but there are some valid reasons for an auto in sports car.

says the guy that has never driven either....

I personally would take an evo, but being AWD makes the car that much more capable and fun. I have both a rear wheel drive high'er hp and awd high'er hp car and the AWD car is more fun.

This.

You can manually adjust the torque distribution on the STi and make it almost a RWD car anyway (80/20 bias).

The AWD is a blast in wet/icy conditions too.

I love RWD as much as the next guy, but AWD can be a blast too. FWD is the one to avoid, but I have had fun in a high-HP FWD car too.

To address OP's original question... No, with $25k I would not buy a 'vette as a fun car. That's a lot of coin that I would spend on what I would consider a more interesting car. In no particular order:

SVT Cobra Mustang
FD RX-7
Lotus Elise
Lotus 7/Locost 7 variant
Supra
Targa NC Miata or two NA/NB Miatas
One of each generation MR2
NSX
etc...

I get the budget super car appeal of the Corvette, it's just never done anything for me.

I like them but I'm not crazy about them.
I think I'd rather have an NSX or something.
I do really love the first generation Viper GTS coupe... (Also cheap to buy used)
Would not say no to a Vette but I don't see myself ever owning one.

No winter driving that thing around here
Personally I like the older C3 but they had frame rot problems. Most of the newer corvettes I see on the road are driven close to the speed limit and are very well taken care of. I say go for it. The Z06 is an awesome car and hey if you drive it for a bit and hate it you can resell it pretty easily. If you just want to check some 'vettes out go up to corvette mikes in Plymouth. He only sells used and has some good deals from time to time. My father in law bought his C4 (I know) there and was very happy with Mike and the deal he got.

Wow. Calm down turbo. If you took my questions as an attack on you, than I apologize. The Vette definitely has downsides (sexiness of the interior being the main complaint) but I've never heard of them being more prone to becoming rattle-traps at least for the C6 generation. The C4 has had the reputation but I haven't heard it for the C5 and C6.

Late reply here; was trying to avoid this thread so I didn't get sucked into any kind of debate...

I wasn't trying to be instigative, nor did I feel you were. The 'Vette is just one of 'those things' that seems to put me at odds with the overwhelming majority of people in this forum (or perhaps the ones with similar opinions just avoid the threads).

I've driven the C6. I just never saw this supposed jump in quality. Has it gotten better? Yeah. But I just feel like they're still trying to put lipstick on the C4 pig. The C5 got round and modern and looked so much prettier...but the plastics still felt so cheap and loose, and the configuration of everything essentially remained unchanged. Which is to be expected, I guess, as the car remained proportionally similar, still needed the high driveshaft tunnel, ect. So it was just 'modernizing' the same space.

Really, the big 'wtf' for me is the percieved jump from C5 to C6...it just didn't seem any better at all. They massaged the dimensions of some stuff, and added some leather or other soft bits to the same ol' cheap plastic.

When you couple that with the hard ride of just the base C6 (which may actually be worse than the upper models, since IIRC is lacks all the dynamic suspension stuff)...man, it just seems miserable inside. I don't have complaints about the drivetrain or the way it handles...I just find the inside to be distracting to the point of DETRACTING from the overall experience of driving the car. I would honestly favor a stripped-out, mostly-metal interior just to be rid of the annoyance and feel more able to have a 'pure' driving experience. I guess I'm kind of a 'do it really well or don't do it all' type.

I have a feeling that if I were to get a C5 Z06 or C6, I'd probably strip the interior, add a half-cage or roll bar, racing seats and harnesses.. which is why I don't view the interior as a negative. I just prefer the look of the C5 over the C6..

I think Corvette Mikes is gone actually. I drove by where it used to be yesterday when I went to the Ultra Super Mega Walmart and it was no longer there. I'm talking about the location by the waterfront on the corner as you approach the main drag.

n/m google was my friend.. Found Corvette mikes.

I'm confused. I can infer from your post that you seem to think I'm talking about something I have not experienced, as if driving a Corvette was some holy grail of driving reserved for a privileged few.

Yet you're equating it with the rarity of...touching a boob.

I think he's just inferring that the Corvette is a relative bargain as high performance cars go. Is it a performance bargain? Yes. Does it have a bunch of shortcomings? Yes. Is it the holy grail of driving? No. Is it as rare as touching a boob? No... or yes... or maybe.

Pretty sure I've answered all your questions.

FTR-I'm not a Corvette fanboy. I have driven a number of them but never owned one. Nor do I really have any desire to own one.

Vette is frugal super racing car, but my sentiment says you should go for Chevrolet Corvette (C6), its price exceed $130,000.99 USD, it has really great facade with impressive lighting, and smooth drive with smart wheel, car seats are really very comfortable movable also...by using door speaker you can enjoy like a heaven... so from my point of view you should go for C6.

Would you buy a 'Vette?
Had two, wouldn't get another. The '96 was leaky junk from the factory and the 2000 developed many (mostly minor) issues. I understand that the C6 is better but I'll not find out.

If you go to the Corvette forums there is a huge post with hundreds of "known" issues, some are serious. GM really left us hanging on the ABS for example.

My Honda has similar mileage and has only had one problem, an O2 sensor needed to be replaced. The only other maintenance I've done is swap out one set of tires (which were much, much cheaper than Vette tires and they lasted longer as well), two 12V batteries, a few wiper blades, and oil/filter every 10,000 miles.

When Honda makes a Vette I'll get another one...

It's not 'wear out,' as in seat covers coming apart or something. It's the rattly mess the car quickly turns into. I'm sure to some, I'm 'just hatin,' so to speak. But I'm just willing to acknowledge the bad along with the good.

Chevy hasnt had those problems in years.

now it's Ford that has the rattle problems on Mustangs and Cobras.

Chevy has come a long way in the last few years.
quality has come up.
