Yes, I think that is how it's going to work.

I for one am sick of having a new socket every year. When I was deciding rather to buy socket 754 or Socket 939, everyone told me to go for socket 939 because 754 was dying out. So I went with socket 939 and now look, its dying out. I am sick of this, cant they stick with one freakin socket like they did with Socket A/462.

You had to get a new motherboard to support the new FSB of each subsequent release of Athlons on Socket A, so what's the difference?

Same here... Although if they decide to come out with quad core on am2, I might change my mind...

I may be upgrading at the end of this year or beginning of next, and if I do I'll probably go AM2 unless somethign new is around the corner. My current setup is fine, but with ut2k7 coming out this year (I think) I may need to, or revert to 800x600.

I don't even need dual core right now, maybe next year - and I'll buy what's out there for 939 if I do.

And then run Win2K on it

These hardware guys are getting too ahead of themselves. I've yet to see any hardcore optimized mutlithreaded programs yet that give some real gains -- yet they are already talking about quad core..... We need to catch up first.

You have a point but there was a difference. Can you use your Socket A T-Bird on a much much more recent chipset designed for the Barton (YES). Can you use your 2 month old Dual Core opteron socket 939 proc on an M2 (NO) thats my point, the upgrade option was there with the socket A, heck there were even some BIOS updates that allowed for the newer AXP cores. A socket change on the other hand you have to buy a new mobo when you want to upgrade. Its like the proc you buy with your mobo is the first and last proc it will ever run.
