I think AM2 might make use of DD2 fully when the cores surpass 2, say 4 cores, then the RAM bandwidth that's needed to supply 4 cores will come into play. I heard Intel is planning to intro 8core CPU within one and half year. This could be pretty intense moment for AMD, if they can't match it they might take a hit. Intel seems to be going full force this time.

To be perfectally honest I dont think any of you really want FBdimms. From what I know/have seen about them they are far slower than the standard ram.

Its alot like the difference between ECC/Registerd versus standard unbuffered. When you add that level of filtering the performance takes a major nose dive.

I certianly do NOT want FBdimms on AM2, Socket F can have em where they belong.

I have a rig based in 939 Opteron 170 and I don't think to change it sooner than the next socket of AMD (or possibly Intel). AM2 socket is so similar to 939 that whoever had a 939 CPU don't have any advantage trading his CPU for a AM2 one.

i think im making a move to dual core soon here. than my next splurge will be on quad core. how many games utilize both cores anyway? ddr2 ram isnt that much of a performance increase that i have noticed between ddr400 ram w/ good timings etc. anyway whatever to each his own

The mounting bracket looks like it will fit my current XP-90 with those 4 hooks. Actually, it looks a lot like the original Socket423/Socket478 bracket.

Hopefully I can still use the cooler, since the newer CPUs will not be much more power hungry.

Depends on how long AMD sticks with AM2.

I won't be switching anytime soon, but if there are some actual drastic clockspeed improvements, i may consider it later on.

Honestly though, i think the chances of me going to Conroe are actually higher, since i think it's going to be an awesome OCing CPU, as long as there are decent mobos for OCing for it.

DDR3 isn't coming anytime soon. At best it will be late 2007, probably early 2008. The "DDR3" spec isn't even set yet. That won't happen for months. This talk about "9 months" and "I want DDR3 now" is pointless.

I might go to AM2, maybe when 65nm ones are released, which I believe sometime next year. But within this year, no, I won't go to AM2. I might go to Intel's Conroe, if benchmark shows it's worth more than X2. AM2 is also consideration for the same manner, but since 90nm AM2 CPUs are expected to have about same IPC with current generation 939s, 90nm AM2 is out of consideration for me.

I'm heavily invested in s939. It'll be a long time before I want/need to upgrade from what I've got now. I'll be getting a new GPU much sooner than I get a new mobo/cpu combo.

It's the 1207 pin Server CPU socket format due out for AMD this summer (or sooner). It will most likely incorporate:
1. Quad core chips
2. FBDimm memory
3. Increased number of coherent HT links (cHT are the links to other processors and other things like possibly co-processors)
4. It will be an LGA socket
5. It's a server-only socket

I don't see any massive advantages of DDR2 over DDR, except that if you buy right now, you'll have an advantage over buying in a year...

But DDR2 may be more advanced then.?

Yep, I'll be hitting up AM2. That 35w X2 3800+ is mine. I'm not even concerned with quad core whatsoever, as I don't even make use of dual core right now, so it's a non-issue for me. Only reason I'd be getting the new 3800+ is because I suspect it will be a hell of an overclocker, doing at least as well as the Opty 165/170's. Plus, I'll have DDR2, which I think should net me a small but decent performance advantage at that high of an overclock.

I'll probably go M2 end of this year or early of next year. From me there is no rush, I'm more then happy with my current setup.

I doubt AM2 will be any faster on duel core maybe when it gets to Quade core yes, I'd get one then.

So let me get this straight... Socket F is going to be to AM2 what 940 was to 939? So, will it be targeted strictly at the server market, due to the expensive RAM, etc (like the buffered DDR required by 940)?
