This is as an upgrade to an existing 939 platform, so its the best bang for the buck in that regard.

yep this is where I am headed. Does anyone know if the opteron is going to be included in the price drop?

I already have a new AMD HTPC rig built, just waiting for the 35 watt CPU's to hit.

I'd only buy an AMD processor if they released an X2 3600+ for less than $150. And called it Sempron X2

But, I won't be buying Conroe any time soon either. I've still got another 6 months to wait for the E4200. I'd pick up an E6300 since it's in my price range, but the multiplier just stinks. Unless I start seeing boards go past 400FSB consistently, I'll continue to wait for the E4200.

Where's the option that says "Already have a dual core Opteron or X2 and will not be upgrading to any currently existing processor?"

I am guessing since it says a new build your situation wouldn't count.

i was planning on building a system for the parents with an AM2 3800+ single core, can get them for about $140 at zzf. total budget for the system is $700-800, with 19" LCD. i don't think i can stay in budget with c2d or x2, might even go down to am2 3500 which are $105. plus they don't want to wait much longer.

I just build a 939 system..and I have enjoyed AMD but it depends on who offers the most value for the cheapest price. I've been wanting to try out intel for quite sometime...and since i am a hardware hobbyist in a year i'll may attempt it

I've been holding off on dual core after doing a 3.4 Prescott/915/DDR2 swap for a nForce4/S939 3200/DDR setup then moving from a S939 3800 to a S939 4000 over the past 2 years. I'm still reserving judgement until I see the Core 2 duo boards vs. the AMD price cuts, but I don't think the AMD price cuts will be low enough for me to stay on 939.

Plus, from what I've seen from AMD in the past few months in terms of accelerated roadmaps, price drops, etc. I'm a bit wary of anything they put out there right now about the near future. They're entirely reactive to whatever Intel's been doing and I don't have the faith that their roadmap/sockets will remain stable as they did with 754/939. Intel's getting lean and mean and they already were already setting the pace of new technology adoption (dd2, chipsets, sockets, etc). Plus I think AMD would be wise to pick their battles as a corporation and spend some time shoring up their turion platform. Most sales growth is in mobile nowadays and they're really missing out

I'm going to stick with my AM2 4200 for a while, not even considering an upgrade until the 65nm A64s come out in Dec-ish.
This is what I'm probably going to do. There was some mention of a new NF single chip chipset coming towards the end of the year that supports dual X16. If that chipset is good and the C2D stills maintains its lead over the 65nm AMD parts, I may go C2D BUT K8L will run on an AM2 board and I will hate myself if I buy C2D and K8L turns out to be faster and cheaper. Looks like I'll be on my present system until sometime in Q1 2007. Maybe I'll bump my ram to 2GB's until then.

Sorry, good idea. I will add it.

I tried to limit the number of options to keep the poll simple. As it is right now I kinda feel there are too many choices to be an effective poll (single question). I started out listed processors individually, but the list grew too large so I simplified it. Most people out there will look for desktop parts and so I excluded the Opterons and Xeons.

Why dont you add Woodcrest CPUs as well as low voltage opterons and possibly new socket ones????

I like quad boxes....

Currently in 939 but would upgrade to a 35W X2 3800+ or just build a HTPC with it (was going to use AXP-M 2500+).

Not interested in Core 2 Duo until it would become a worthwhile investment to me (say Q1 07).

I like the performance of the C2D, but it's still more than I want to spend even on the 6300. I've got a Barton 2500+ which does OK, but AGP is basically dead, and I want a faster video card. I'm considering picking up an AM2 and a sub-$100 CPU, and pairing it with an Nvidia 7600. Then someday when faster X2s come down in price, possibly pick one of those up and drop it in.
