Would you buy i7 2.66Ghz or i5 2.8

Ok if the price of a P55 based mobo is similar to the price of a low end x58. Which one would you buy ??


The i5 does not have QPI but it has huge bump in the speed of turbo mode. If the i5 2.8ghz has the same price of the i7 2.66Ghz and same is true for the mobo hich ould you buy??

Depends on what I was using it for...for my case.. gaming. So prob the i5 then, but thats just because some benchmarks have the i5 beating i7 in said tasks.

The big question for me is how does it do with AVCHD encoding, editing, etc.

Since I generally just game and am unconcerned with synthetic benchmarks, I'd say the i5, as it will likely be a cheaper system overall when you consider the motherboard.

Now, if ALL prices of all components were the same, I'd go socket 1366, because I assume intel will put better chips out for it. But you really never know I suppose.

i7, both will likely OC the same. Though I guess there's socket longevity questions...

You mean, i7 920 vs i7 860, cause they'll both be i7's.

Anyways, I think the 2.8GHz i7 860 will end up similar to 2.93GHz i7 950, without Turbo.

As above, they'll overclock the same, so get the one that will support 6-cores. If you don't overclock, and don't need/want the gulftown upgrade option, the lynnfield is the better choice.

Hello, newbie here.

I am in this exact quandary; planning to do an upgrade later in the year and not really sure where to go. I think the i7 860 as it's called here will be the best way, but not sure. I think it might be the best mid-range choice as I'm not planning on overclocking or doing anything too fancy.

Just wish they'd hurry up... Almost got an E8500 C2Duo early this year but decided to wait, so I'm getting a bit impatient now.

I dont think they will OC at the same level i7 may OC more....

The i5 has integrated the PCI Express 2.0 controller... IMO there may be a barrier to reach higher clock but hey i am not sure.
The QPI may or may not be useful for SLI and crossfire.

Can anyone confirm weather or not QPI plays a part or not for SLI and Crossfire???

Just to give everyone some quick updates since it might be nice to have links in this thread:

Our fine host has an early photo of ASUS new P55 chipset setup: http://www.anandtech.com/weblog/showpost.aspx?i=614. You can see the price of the P55 chipset will be considerably more reasonable than a high-end X58. GK also notes that the final silicon spins of the lynnfield will be done by week's end. We'll see.

Lynnfield (i5) review, which is more or less everything we know about it at this point: http://www.anandtech.com/c...t...doc.aspx?i=3570. I think it's mentioned in this article that the choice, unlockable OCing chips will generally be kept within the i7 area; someone can, and I'm sure will, correct me if I am wrong. Don't have time to pick through it.
