Oh no, not this again.

That thing's been voted most useless 'gamer' device more times than I can care to count.

"With vehicles, multiple weapons and up to 64 players on a map, a Battlefield 2 game is a network torture session. The server constantly sends new information about the position of everything on the Battlefield, what it?s doing and where it?s headed. When the fighting gets hot and the UAV?s up, the network traffic can cripple even the best CPUs "

BF2 ran just fine on my Barton 3200 when it first came out. It hasnt crippled my Q6600 yet either.I always get under 30ms on most of my favorite servers in BF2.I dont play MMO's.

Truth. I wonder how much money they're making off these things .. 10 dollar NICs sold for hundreds of dollars.

THE PRICE SUCKS, but with that said my new build will have the MB inverted and this NIC would look SWEET thru my windows with the big cool ass looking heatsink. I would honestly pay maybe even $100, but $229 get out of here....

At least it's a well polished product with stuff like NIC apps and a nice presentation (and it actually works) but yeah it's not worth the money. I don't criticize the company because the actual product is pretty nice and every company who provides a premium overcharges.

Hey I guess it's better than charging $499.99 for an ethernet cable that doesn't even bring any advantages over $5 CAT5s

I often dream of a 9000$ super gaming machine that would include this card. Not as a necessity but purely to maximize my dream computer. Too bad it'll never happen =(

How on earth would you get a dream PC that runs 9 grand??? I mean here's what I typically think of in a dream machine (at the moment, obviously it'll change ina couple months)

CPU: Core2 Quad CPUs (pair) max speed available
RAM: 8 gigabytes of the fastest RAM available
Motherboard: Best one capable of handling the demands
HDD: Fastest 1 terabyte drives in a RAID 5 array 1 really fast boot drive (Raptor X)
Sound card: Sound Blaster x-fi Fatality super special signed in blood edition
Video card: Pair of latest gen nVidia based cars running in SLi
Power supply: most capable one available
Case: Nicest looking Lian Li case I can find
Monitor: pair of dell 30" widescreen LCDs
Speakers: Creative Gigaworks 7.1
Mouse: Logitech G1000
Keyboard: Logitech G15

All of that is really great stuff but I just can't see it approaching 9 grand.

I wouldn't get that until you've made cheaper and more cost-effective upgrades first, such as spraypainting your computer black and installing a DVD rewinder.

It was an exaggerated number that I pulled off the top of my head?...

If you cut back to one monitor and skimp on the hard drives then you're right on the cusp of $9K...Skulltrail isn't cheap...

I have one of these cards. I bought it for the development and the gawk factor but it is a better NIC than the Intel Gigabit PRO adapter it replaced.

Also, you should understand a bit about what it is before saying its a 10 dollar nic. If you tried to buy the parts for it then it would probably cost you somewhere around 130 dollars. It is nothing short of a PC on a board.

The drivers are great in Vista64 and XP32, the gaming mode reduces my pings through shit BellSouth/ATT DSL in North Central Florida ( who travel to MIAMI then jump to ATLANTA ) by 20ms. Seeing how I would get crap pings to even Orlando that weren't much different than pings to Texas it was a showstopper for me in CS:S and DoD.

Its the most advanced NIC on the market for consumers. Except for the price its a great card. Not necessary for some people but I would have to go buy a Cable Modem for 80 bucks and switch to Cable to get the speeds I get of my DSL with the card which wasn't an option when I bought the card ( cable co. here was crap then ).

2x Dell 3008s = 4000
2x Intel Core 2 Extreme QX 9775 3.2Ghz = 3200
1x Intel D5400XS Skulltrail = 630
4x2GB DDR2-1100 = 275
2x Radeon 4870X2s = ~1000

Thats about 8500 dollars right there, and I haven't spec'd any hard drives, optical drives, speakers, a sound card, a mouse, a keyboard, a case, or a power supple.

How does this NIC make your DSL run faster?

For a PC of that greatness I would go with electrostatic headphones and a separate sub woofer.

Are you guys nuts? I bought two of these actually. Rigged them up and doubled my connection speed, and lowered my ping by 4 times (inverse square relationship). I need to add a third. Easily worth the price. Don't listen to these jealous fools.

As ridiculous as this price may be, server network cards often run in this price range. Not that your workstation needs a server network card, but... just saying.

Shenanigans.

I'm working with three geographical sites with 5-8 hardware load balanced web servers. Each of these is pushing down to an array of 8 application servers which are in turn hitting a single SQL server running a single (redundancy teamed) NIC. I just reviewed a network trace 3.8GB in size that spanned a 7 second period. Every link in the network is giving ms response times that would be suitable for gaming.

Battlefield ain't got sh1t on this.

That NIC is a waste of money.

I have 4 of these. The quadratic equation timetable really shows at these numbers. My PC is on the FBI's dangerous weapons list now, its so fast.
