one of my friends works for a moving company.
business is booming. lots of OT.

he said he worked 100hrs last week (7days) and grossed 6k (including bonus for working 100hrs).
at most its a 1hr ride (depending on traffic) from old location to new location.

he's tired and probably wont do that again for a couple of weeks.
but he's going to work tomorrow (mon).

the company doesnt like people taking off any day during the week after doing overtime and has fired people that took off the next day.

would you work 100hrs/week heavy labor for $6k?
why or why not?

and how often would you do it?
(every other week? once a month? just once?)

There are thousands of people that do that type of work for infinitely less money. I personally wouldn't but if he's single, has no other commitments, make the money while he's young.

When I was 20 I would have done it. In those days I could handle 2-a-days in football and that was for free. Now I can still do heavy labor, but not for 14 hours a day. So couldn't even if I wanted to.

$6k * 52 weeks = $300k+

Heck yes, I'd work like crazy for a year and then enjoy 5 years off haha.

I never have or ever will work that much. Just isn't worth it. But I do like the job.

Yes if I were to be doing it right now, I am 20, I could easily put in those hours and just let my social life take a dive for awhile, I'm sure I'd burn out after a few months but I already do 14 hour shifts at my current job on a semi regular basis so i think I could do 100 hour weeks for awhile anyway.

um.. u r forgetting about taxes.

at 60k/yr, your tax rate is like 25% fed.
at 300k, your tax rate is around 40%.

and lets not forget state, which is up to 10% in calif.
so 50% taxes plus medicare and some social security

My dad was a mover for 25 years. His knees and back are in bad shape.

It's not for everyone and it's hard work. My father moved the old hideabed sofas from the 3rd floor.

20 yrs ago, I would have killed someone to earn $6k a week, and could have handled the conditions as long as beer, encouragement, and appreciation were supplied in some form.

Today, fuuuuuuuuuck that...I would die

Certainly not as a long term career, but I would do it for a while. It would seem like a great opportunity to bank some money while you're young.

I think hard labor and long hours are very good for people when they're younger in terms of mental toughness and fortitude as well. The more you have worked in the past the more you'll be willing to work in the future. That doesn't just carry over to future hard manual tasks, but to everything you apply yourself to.

No. Aside from my back being shot, I despise moving. It's not worth any amount of money unless I'm just standing there supervising.

There's a difference between marginal and effective tax rates.

Fed: http://taxes.about.com/od/Federal-Income-Taxes/fl/Federal-Income-Tax-Rates-for-the-Year-2014.htm

  • 10% on taxable income from $0 to $9,075, plus
  • 15% on taxable income over $9,075 to $36,900, plus
  • 25% on taxable income over $36,900 to $89,350, plus
  • 28% on taxable income over $89,350 to $186,350, plus
  • 33% on taxable income over $186,350 to $405,100, plus
CA: http://www.tax-brackets.org/californiataxtable

  • 1 percent on the first $7,582 of taxable income.
  • 2 percent on taxable income between $7,583 and $17,976.
  • 4 percent on taxable income between $17,977 and $28,371.
  • 6 percent on taxable income between $28,372 and $39,384.
  • 8 percent on taxable income between $39,385 and $49,774.
  • 9.30 percent on taxable income between $49,775 and 254,250.

I've done 100hrs/week in IT.
got paid straight time
but got a nice year end bonus.

unfortunately, nowadays white collar companies are leaning towards paying comp time for overtime worked.

Someone doing that probably wouldn't last an entire career and would likely get injured, and from the OP it seems he/she would be fired shortly after.

I've done that kind of work for a hell of a lot less. Both moving and delivering furniture. I've also worked a job with seven 12 hour shifts a week for more than a year straight.

But I make $100-140 an hour now, billing on average about 15 hours per week, so wouldn't have much reason to work like that for $60 an hour.

how did u come to that conclusion??

he wont be working OT for a couple of weeks, but still will be working the normal 5days @8hrs/day.

For that type of money, I'd do it every day for a few years, maybe longer depending on how well my body can handle the type of work.

Not sure which part you meant, but if it's the being fired part:

the company doesnt like people taking off any day during the week after doing overtime and has fired people that took off the next day.

I know that's just for OT, but the company doesn't seem very accommodating.

Even comp time is about gone, plus vacation time turned into use it or lose it, double boned working some project deadline so no time off and lots of extra hours and you end up taking vacation time when it suits the company a day or two at a time.

OP question, manual labor that pays more than double minimum wage is VERY rare, so tons of people would jump on a chance at $6k for 100 hours a week, but I don't know where you might find a job that pays that. Here in SoCal, the pricey OC, the charge for labor is $40/hr or less, and I doubt the pay is more than half the charged rate.
