I would do it if it was once in a while, but not all the time, especially if it's 7 days a week that means I have absolutely zero life. I work shift work and I'm so used to it now, I would have trouble going back to 5 days a week, nevermind 7. Currently I typically work 4 days at a time then get 4 off. My next set is 6 night shifts then I get 5 days off. It varies, but in general I get almost 50% of my days off.

Though if there was something routine that happens say, once a month, where they need someone to work crazy hours of physical labor, I would not mind doing it every now and then. Decent bonus and a good workout, and still get a break.

I did moving for a summer as a student, we moved all the stuff from my school to the new building. Was 10 hour shifts but we got Friday off, so that was a pretty good deal. 10 hours actually goes by pretty fast when you are doing light duty physical labor. I say light duty, because it was not go go go go, we got plenty of breaks in between, and it was not just moving stuff, but also cleaning and other misc tasks.

In my youth...hell yes.

I worked many months of 7-12's for less than $4K/week...although, in truth, I didn't really work for a living...I sat on my ass and watched other people work.

Eventually there will be an injury, the more tired you are the higher risk there is of injury. No one could make it a year at that pace, IMO. In fact, I doubt they could last more than a few months.

There is that but a once in awhile thing isnt to bad.

As a company though they should look into the returns. I know where i work (shipyard) they have done studies and found that for us working anything over 10+ hours isnt worth it. They found the amount of work done in a 12 hour shift is the same as the amount done in an 8 hour shift (on average). Plus when it lasts more than a week it gets to be less and less. Was actually pretty interesting to read what they found for our workplace.

As for his job...id do it if i was him. A week here or there of super long shifts just means a nice paycheck. For me when we go on overtime i usually do half in comp time and half in money with the money side capping out at 30 hours (after 30 it bumps tax brackets). But i enjoy my time away from work a lot more than i do money

I wouldn't do that now, but I have in the past and for a lot less money . I worked for Atlas van lines for almost two years back in the late seventies, and I can tell you it's a hard damn way to make money. We got paid well, but I never made anything like $6000 (adjusted)/week despite being a relief driver and getting that pay too.

I think the people here voting "yes" have never had a heavy labor job in their life. If they had they would know 100 hrs of that shit is unsustainable

I would probably be dead after my first week.

My dad was a mover for 25 years. His knees and back are in bad shape.

It's not for everyone and it's hard work. My father moved the old hideabed sofas from the 3rd floor.

Moving heavy crap 100hrs/week will wreck your body pretty quickly, even when you're young.

Sorry - just to make sure I got this right; 100hr, per week, 7 days.

So, he works 14 hour days,.. for 7 days straight?

Might do it once or twice just to say I've done it. I've pulled 80+ hours weeks many times, but it wasn't physical labor.

14+ hour days for 6k a week? Yeah, I'd do it for awhile. Considering I did that for much, much less while in the military.

Would depend on what they were expecting you to lift, don't get me wrong I don't mind heavy stuff but some bosses are asking you to risk slipping a disc every time you go to work. If it was possible to do the job without putting my health at risk then yes I would do it for a couple of years if I needed the cash.

I said no, but that's only because I'd do it as a one-off thing.

I value my free time too much and I have other committments (dog, girlfriend).

Usually OT is available here at work, so I could easily work 60-70 hours weeks if I wanted. But I choose not to because I'd rather be in the gym lifting, at home with my dog or playing video games.

the most i could handle when i was in early 20s was 14-15 hour days for about 2 weeks straight, then id need a few days to recoup. i loaded semis for concerts, it would be 7am to 2 or 3am most every night, with about 4 hours off for the sound checks and show. all loaded by hand 95% of the time, hard work. crappy money. i did it for 12 or so years until i had to get a real job (aka had kids).

100hrs/week of heavy labor (work where you get out of breath every 15 minutes) would end up breaking your body very quickly. Not sure $6000 is worth slipped discs, worn hips, torn acl's, ripped rotator cuffs, and everything else that would come with that.

I voted no.

I worked in the Audio /Video industry for a few years. And when we would make > 16 hours a day, the next day is an enforced free day to recuperate. But i also did not make that kind of money. 6K is a lot, i could have done it when i was younger for a week, maybe two but that is it. I would definitely need a week off after that.

That's alot of money for unskilled manual labor. If your body can withstand it for a few years you could be set for a long while.

FWIW, there are harder jobs. My cousin works crab/fishing boats in Alaska. Much more insane hours, arguably harder work than moving, conditions suck, etc. and he managed to survive doing it for 6 years.

hell no. I've done plenty of 60-65 hour weeks in helpdesk and a few double shifts here n there at manual labor type jobs. no way in hell would i do 100hrs of heavy labor. $6k is a lot but my free time, sanity, well being and social life (little as it may be) are all worth more than that. i will make my money in other, better ways.

i have a job i like with a reasonable career path.. good benefits, good perks, great people and there are even bonuses. manual labor will remain a thing of the past for me.
