Salmon that has been genetically engineered to grow twice as fast as its natural counterpart inched a little closer toward the nation’s dinner tables on Friday.

The Food and Drug Administration released its findings that the fish do not pose a threat to the environment and are “as safe as food from conventional Atlantic salmon.”

GM foods suck just as much as GM cars. would you eat this stuff? :hmm:

from wiki, theres probably a high percentage that most of the crops we already consume are GMed

Papaya has been genetically modified to resist the ringspot virus. The New York Times stated that "in the early 1990s, Hawaii’s papaya industry was facing disaster because of the deadly papaya ringspot virus. Its single-handed savior was a breed engineered to be resistant to the virus. Without it, the state’s papaya industry would have collapsed. Today, 80% of Hawaiian papaya is genetically engineered, and there is still no conventional or organic method to control ringspot virus."[9]
The New Leaf potato, brought to market by Monsanto in the late 1990s, was developed for the fast food market, but was withdrawn from the market in 2001[10] after fast food retailers did not pick it up and food processors ran into export problems.[11] There are currently no transgenic potatoes marketed for human consumption.[11] However, in October 2011 BASF requested cultivation and marketing approval as a feed and food from the EFSA for its Fortuna potato, which was made resistant to late blight by adding two resistance genes, blb1 and blb2, which originate from the Mexican wild potato Solanum bulbocastanum.[12][13]
As of 2005, about 13% of the zucchini grown in the US was genetically modified to resist three viruses; the zucchini is also grown in Canada.[14]

If the government says it's safe to eat, then it must be safe. The US government wouldn't lie to its citizens.

Between this and your sig, I'm guessing you're a truther.

LOL

I'd eat it. Every time a new breed or cultivar is created it is because of genetic modifications. Whether that happens as a result of cross-pollination or a lab, idgaf.

Are you an Alamoer as a Texan? Remember the Alamo.

I try to avoid consuming any genetically spliced organisms. So no.

We've been genetically modifying our crops and livestock for thousands of years.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_breeding

All genetic modification, whether selective breeding or modern techniques like gene splicing, have the potential to produce undesired traits, and the ironic thing is that GM foods are far more regulated and heavily scrutinized for toxicity, allergenicity, etc. than conventionally modified foods.

That said, not a big fan of salmon, so probably wouldn't eat either.

Human beings have been genetically modifying foods for thousands of years. You're not going to find any farm animals or farm crops that haven't been substantially and purposefully genetically modified from their wild ancestors.

I suppose you're really talking about gene splicing, which certainly widens the range of modifications that can be done. I don't really see the threat here.

http://www.salmonoftheamericas.com/oceanfarming/facts.php

Atlantic salmon account for over 95 percent of the ocean-farmed salmon produced, with most of them raised in ocean-farms on the Pacific coast of Canada and Chile. Atlantic salmon have high farm survival rates, which can be contributed to the efficient way they convert food to body weight, and their ability to adapt to farming techniques.

Commercial fisheries for wild Atlantic salmon are very small and have been dramatically reduced in recent years due to concerns about wild population levels.

Glad to know conventional = farm-raised :awe:

The only way to get real salmon if you go out on a boat yourself

I guess we're eating so much food, that "wild" salmon can never replenish itself..

no...actually make that HELL NO! you dont know what that stuff could do to you. it could give you cancer or your kids could be born with fins. they havent tested that sheet, the government has no idea whether or not its safe. why take that chance when the natural stuff is perfectly good. the only reason they invented these salmon that grow twice as big is so some corporation could make twice as much money. it doesnt make sense to take that risk just so someone else can make a boatload of money

Just about everything we eat has been genetically modified. From bananas to everything that has corn starch in it. Why do you think cancer rates have gone up?

While profit is obviously involved, there is also the whole 'keep people from starving to death' thing.

You go live off the land, picking berries, killing wild game, being...'natural.'

And while you're off being a douchebag hypocrite, the rest of us will be using agriculture, as humans have for thousands of years, to not make our ecosystem collapse from unsustainable methods of obtaining food.

I would personally eat GM salmon but I'd like consumers to be able to select between naturally caught salmon and GM'ed. Pros and cons to both sides of the argument and the reasoning behind both sides are very reasonable and respectable.
