Seeing as it's a family heirloom and has some meaning I figure I might wear it someday but I'm not even a jewelry guy. I don't wear a watch, necklace, piercing, or ring. Plus it looks like something a pimp or richer guy might wear. It's got 2 red emeralds? and it's surrounded by diamonds. Forgive the crappy pics as it's the best my phone can do. I'm just wondering what the avg person thinks of it, is it normal or over the top for someone in late 20s? It's also only fits on my pinky now.

I'd make sure you know exactly what you have before you go selling it. You don't want to find out later that you had a million dollar ring and sold it for a few hundred bucks at the local pawn shop.

Doesn't look like a wedding ring to me, although I suppose any ring technically could suffice. Mine looks very similar to THIS ONE.

Looks more like a pinky ring to me, and depending on your grandfather's background, may have been something he wore just to be "stylish."


From the looks of the ring, setting and mounting, I'd be VERY surprised if the stones were more than rubies, although they certainly could be garnets as well. Quite popular stone for men's rings.

Since it's an "heirloom," you're more-or-less obligated to keep it, at least as long as the "old people" are still alive.

Take it to one of the better jewelry stores in your area, show the ring to the sales staff, ask for opinions on the ring. If they indicate it may be valuable, ask them to appraise the ring for insurance purposes. It may cost a bit, but you'll find out exactly what the stones are, what quality they are, and an approximate value.
