What I don't get is why there are so many people unwilling to consider limits to the potential firepower that a deranged person can bring to bear. Maybe restricting magazine sizes to less than a dozen rounds would give us more of a chance to rise up and disarm the shooter. What disgusts me is how we can allow the NRA to derail laws against private ownership of what amount to weapons of war.

P.S. -- still need excel help?
What if 4 attackers are a busting into your mom's/sister's/wife's/girlfriend's house. How many rounds does she need?

PS. I might on Friday. I am traveling for work and haven't worked on it for two days. Thanks.

This argument doesn't make any sense to me, because the reason people CCW to begin with is because they don't trust random strangers. No one carries a pistol with them because they're worried that a bear might attack their family while they're at JC Penney, they do it in case someone tries to rob or assault them. And that's perfectly reasonable. But you don't need an AR-15 for that, and bringing one to the mall or the grocery store or some other public location in the wake of recent mass shootings is not endearing ANYONE to the cause of gun owners.

Here's the thing. I'm staunchly in favor of the 2nd amendment. I honestly think that law-abiding Americans should be allowed to have access to all firearms, even the stuff that's currently banned under the assault weapons ban. But I am also in favor of gun owners exercising common sense. There are literally zero reasons that I would accept as reasonable for someone to bring an AR-15 into a shopping center, while there are several reasons I could see against it. The same doesn't apply to concealed weapons. And if legal gun owners just exercised some common sense, we wouldn't even be having this conversation. How does making people nervous by showing up with a scary looking AR-15 in a public place endear a single person to the cause of gun owners? Be smarter about this! You're just making legitimate gun owners look ridiculous and I personally don't want to see further restrictions on the 2nd amendment.
See, I knew you and I agreed.

Absolutely, and we do have them. And you benefit from it.

A citizen does not have the capability to own/maintain/use a nuclear weapon, so for national defense we count on .mil/.gov.

On the other hand, .gov cannot protect your home from multiple intruders, so for that my family counts on me.

No different from someone taking pictures with an iPad. Just because you can do it doesn't mean you should. I would consider that person an attention whore.

But who will protect them when you get too old to play Steven Segal (i.e. turn 30)?

More seriously, I think the point that sandorski was drawing your attention to is that a line has to be drawn somewhere that seperates what kinds of weaponry individuals can and can not possess.

I gather we agree that nuclear weapons are on the "can not" side of that line. I'll risk saying that you'd agree that tanks, artillery, mortars, flame throwers, hand grenades, and poisonous gas are also on the "can not" side.

IMHO it doesn't make much sense to allow individuals to own assault weapons or other military-style weaponry that give those potentially deranged souls living amongst us the means to declare war on their neighborhood, local school, and/or shopping mall.

I think the line needs to be redrawn to move these weapons onto the "can not" side.

(and that doesn't make me ignorant )

it's not illegal, don't call the damn cops. if you're scared of an open carry ar-15 then you'd be shitting your pants in "insert third world country here"

talk about a product of your environment

If my country gets to the point where open carrying an AR-15 is the norm, we got bigger problems.

All you gun nuts who talk about how it isn't a big deal and you wouldn't feel unsafe - talk about letting your guard down. You think it's smart and important to own guns on the teeny tiny chance that someone attacks you, yet you see a person carrying an AR-15 and that's somehow not cause for concern? You're either being hyper vigilant or you're not. Sounds like you people are suffering from some serious cognitive dissonance.

I would be lying if I didn't say I would be a little wary of the guy. But if he isn't running around pointing it at people, I don't consider it threatening.

I feel sorry for him.
Obviously some mind game making up for his teeny tiny willie. Pretty sad indeed.

The better question, if there were a dozen just like him hired and standing outside your child's school, as you drove into the school parking lot with your child, would you let your child out of the car?
Or would you drive away with your child saying to yourself, "maaaaaybeeee not". ???

Paranoia and vigilance are not the same thing.

Why can't there be middle ground? Carry a weapon in case something bad happens, be cautious when you see someone with a rifle?

Now you're crimes with long rifles with all violent crimes (robbery/murder/rape/etc.). Both are fairly low chances to begin with, but one is significantly lower, probably by a factor of 10 but I don't really care to dig around for estimated numbers.
