Ditto Warcon and many others. You need to swap PS/2 devices, keyboards, and ANY internal cable like power or drive cables when the unit is powered down. Otherwise it is a crap shoot as to what will blow on what type of motherboard. USB,serial, speaker,microphone/line-in/out and paralell devices are the only safe ones to hot swap or connect/disconnect.

PS/2 ports aren't designed for hot-swapping. I don't do it. Many times you'll be fine, sometimes you won't. I'm not risking my motherboard. Maybe I'm just a wussie when it comes to my expensive-sih computer parts.

As for magnetic screwdrivers, the magnets in the hard drives are much more powerful than the magnets in a magnetic tipped screw driver. The only way you'll damage something is by scratching PCB or hard drive platters (of course, if you are opening your hard drives to get at the platters...).

i was just finishing a build of a friends system.Everything was perfect.
I had been hot swapping the ps2 kbm between that pc and another.
the side off as i had to still mount qa usb braket in the back.
i booted up the machine and noticed a small glowing area near the ps2 port...(hmm thats odd i dont remember any LEDS being directly behind the ps2 ports)next thing ya know BZZZT! white light!

magnetic screwdrivers won't screw up your computer, many computer repair specialists use them.

hot-swapping PS/2 peripherals is bad, so I hear, but I also heard, IIRC, that current motherboards are alright with it.

hmm...

Would I and Do I - yes...
Should I - probably not since there is power going through it. But, since one's never blow up on me (for that) - what the heck.

I DO use magnetic screw drivers though. The motherboard that the PS2 port was like somone else said way up there was also a PCchips baord AKA a POS hehe. Never tried it on my A7N8X DLX but I don't plan to either.
